PWHT For Alloy Steel

The document outlines the post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) procedures for alloy steel pipes and plates of varying thicknesses (25mm, 30mm, 50mm, and 100mm). It details the restricted heating rates, soaking temperatures, and the time calculations required for each thickness, emphasizing the importance of adhering to specific temperature and time standards. Additionally, it provides conversion methods for hours and minutes to ensure accurate timing during the heating process.

PWHT_PROCEDURE_ALLOY STEEL

THK ≤ 25MM (PIPE)_ 222°C→5550

≤ 25MM THK→TO TAKE TEMP & TIME=222°C/hr.

֍So Restricted Heating is in this thickness → (≤ 25 MM THK) →TO TAKE TEMP & TIME=222°C/hr.

STEP: 1 → RESTRICTED HEAT RATE PROCEDURE FOR ≤ 25 MM THK _ A.S STEEL

To note holding temp=720°c (as per code)

Holding temp - Restricted heat temp

720°c - 300°c = 420°c

Note→ wall thickness=25mm

Normally (≤ 25 MM THK) standard value →TO TAKE TEMP & TIME=222°C/hr.

420°C
= =1.89° C/HRS
222°c

To change MINS-----189*60=113.4
? ? How many hours & mins in 113.4
113.4

60 mins=1 hour

53.4 mins ≃ 54
So totally = 1 hour & 54 mins for restricted heating temp finally found

STEP: 1 → SOAKING TEMP PROCEDURE FOR ≤ 25 MM THK _ A.S STEEL

≤25mm thk material always take time standard value= 2 hour

1-AS
THK 30 MM (PIPE)_ 222°C→5550
30 mm

1”inch=25 mm
Balance=5 mm
25+5=30 mm
So 1st we take 1”inch=25mm → So Restricted Heating → TO TAKE TEMP & TIME=222°C/hr.
STEP: 1 → RESTRICTED HEAT RATE PROCEDURE FOR 30 MM THK _ A.S STEEL
1" inch thk ∗ Maximum heating rate
Formula =
Wall thk
25∗ 222°C
= =185°c/hr.
30

Soaking temp for c-mn steel=720°c

Restricted temp=300°c
720°C− 300°C
= =2.27°C/ hrs.
185°C

Now change hrs. To Mins → 2.27*60= 136.2 Mins

? ? How many hours & mins in 136.2
136.2

60

60

16.2 → (60 mins +60 mins +16.2 mins =136.2→its called 2 hrs & 16.2 mins)
60 mins its called 1 hr
SO 2 hr & 16.2 Mins → For Restricted heating rate temp is =300°c to 720°c
STEP: 2 → SOAKING TEMP PROCEDURE FOR 30 MM THK _ A.S STEEL
As per code ≤ 25 mm thk → soaking time is 2 hr
Now we change 2 hr to Mins---------------2 hr = 120 Mins
Mins

1"thk
120
= 4.8
25

Now we take total thk=30mm

30*4.8=144 mins

2-AS
? ? How many hours & mins in 144 mins

144 mins

60 Mins 60 mins + 60 mins + 24 mins = 2 hrs & 24 mins
60 Mins so totally 2 hr & 24 mins→ or its called 144 mins
24 mins

THK 50 MM (PLATE)-200°C→5000
50 mm

1”inch=25 mm
2”inch=25 mm
25+25=50 mm
So 1st we take 1”inch=25mm → So Restricted Heating → TO TAKE TEMP & TIME=200°C/hr.
STEP: 1 → RESTRICTED HEAT RATE PROCEDURE FOR 50 MM THK _ A.S STEEL
1" inch thk ∗ Maximum heating rate
Formula =
Wall thk
25∗ 200°C
= =100°c/hr
50

Soaking temp for c-mn steel=720°c

Restricted temp=300°c
720°C− 300°C
= =4.2° C/ hrs.
100°C

Now change hrs. To Mins → 4.2*60= 252 Mins

? ? How many hours & mins in 252
252

60 MINS FOR 1 HOUR

60 MINS FOR 1 HOUR

60 MINS FOR 1 HOUR

60 MINS FOR 1 HOUR

12 MINS

60+60+60+60+12=252(4 HOURS & 12 MINS)

3-AS
SO 4 hr & 12 Mins → For Restricted heating rate temp is =200°c to 720°c

STEP: 2 → SOAKING TEMP PROCEDURE FOR 50 MM THK _ A.S STEEL (per inch 1 hrs to take FOR A.S)
5000
= 100°𝐶
50

So per hour 100°c

1” inch 25 mm=2 hour
2” inch 50 mm=2 hour Totally 4 hours soaking temp should give for 50 mm thk
or
As per code ≤ 25 mm thk → soaking time is 2 hr
Now we change 1hr to Mins---------------2 hr = 120 Mins
Mins

1"thk
120
= 4.8≃5
25

Now we take total thk=50mm

50*5=250 mins
Now calculate how many hours in 300 mins?
? ? How many hours & mins in 300

250

60

60

60

60

10
60+60+60+60+10=250 mins for 4 hours & 10mins

4-AS
THK 100 MM_PLATE_200°C→5000
5000
= 50°𝐶→ 50°𝐶/ℎ𝑟
100

Now do not take 50°𝐶, but should take minimum heating temp 60°c, because as per code
standard start on 60°c , so we take 60°c
As per code standard heating temp maximum & minimum
Minimum=60°c /ℎ𝑟
Maximum=200°c /ℎ𝑟
STEP: 1 → RESTRICTED HEAT RATE PROCEDURE FOR 100 MM THK _ A.S STEEL for 300°c to 600°c

Holding temp or soaking temp = 720°c

Restricted heat starting temp = 300°c
720-300=420°c
So now we take minimum heat temp for 100 mm thk plate=60°c
420/60=7 hrs
420°c

300+60=360°c

360+60=420°c

42+60=480°c

480+60=540°c

540+60=600°c

600+60=660°c

660+60=720°c

300°c to 360°c → 1 hrs

360°c to 420°c → 1hrs

420°c to 480°c → 1hrs totally 7 hrs for 100 mm thk material

480°c to 540°c → 1hrs restricted heat temp (300°c to 720°c)

540°c to 600°c → 1hrs

600+60=660°c → 1hrs

660+60=720°c → 1hrs

5-AS
NOTE:
Sometimes 5 hrs will come decimal value, → Example 5.2 hrs
5.2 hrs to convert mins
5.2*60=312 mins
? ? How many hrs in 312 mins

60 mins it called 1 hrs totally 5 hrs

60 mins it called 1 hrs

60 mins it called 1 hrs

300 mins

Balance 12 mins

Soaking time procedure for 720°c

100 mm thk

25 mm total 50 mm→ 4 hrs

25 mm 25+25=50mm

25 mm → add only 15 mins
