kids: your grandma has died.
Lara: Oh no, not nana! When did she die?
Dad: She passed away peacefully in her
sleep last night. How are you feeling,
Casper?
Casper: I don’t know. This is the first time any of
our family have died and I guess I
should be really sad, but I feel kind
of numb.
Dad: Numb? It’s the shock and you’ll find
that your feelings come to you later
on when you’ve had time to digest
the information.
Lara: I feel sad already. I just want to burst
into tears.
Casper: The fact that Lara’s crying is making
me feel even worse. What’s wrong
with me?
Dad: Everyone processes bad news differently, no way is right or wrong.
Casper: I do feel really sad that I’ll never get to speak to grandma again. We have so many
wonderful memories of nana that I will always feel happy when I think of her though.
Dad: Well, that’s a really mature and healthy way of thinking of it. We’ll all miss grandma, but
it’s much better for us to celebrate her life than mourn her death.
