A. Preliminary
Activities Submission of Homework and discussing the answer to the assignment
1. A person is earning P600 per day to do a certain job. Express the total salary S as
a function of the number n of days that the person works.
Answer: S(n) = 600n

D. Analysis PIECEWISEWISE FUNCTION
There are functions that requires more than one formula in order to obtain
the given output. There are instances when we need to describe situations
in which a rule or relationship changes as the input value crosses certain
boundaries. In this case, we need to apply the piecewise function.
A piecewise function is a function in which more than one formula is used
to define the output. Each formula has its own domain, and the domain of
the function is the union of all these smaller domains. We notate this idea
like this:
E. Abstraction Discuss to the class the following problems and solutions.
1. The fee to park in the parking lot of a shopping mall costs ₱40.00
for the first two hours and an extra ₱10.00 for each hour (or a
fraction of it) after that. If you park for more than 12 hours, you
instead pay a flat rate of ₱200.00, represent your parking fee using
the function p(t) where t is the number of hours you parked in the
mall.
Solution:

{
40if 0<t ≤ 2
p ( t ) = 40+10 ( t−2 ) if 2<t ≤ 12
200 if t>12
2. A school’s fair committee wants to sell t-shirts for their school fair.
They found a supplier that sells t-shirt at a price of ₱175.00 a piece
but can charge ₱15,000 for a bulk order of 100 shirts and ₱125 for
each excess t-shirt after that. Use a piecewise function to represent
the cost in terms of the number of t-shirts purchased.
Solution:
{
175 nif 0<n ≤ 99
F ( n )= 15000 if n=100
15000+125 ( n−100 ) if n>100
3. A certain chocolate bar costs ₱35.00 per piece. However, if you buy
more than 10 pieces, they will be marked down to a price of ₱32.00
per piece. Use a piecewise function to represent the cost in terms
of the number of chocolate bars bought.
Solution:
f ( n )=¿
Answer the following problems. For each problem, select a student to share their
answer to the class.
1. A school’s fair committee wants to sell t-shirts for their school fair. They found a
supplier that sells t-shirt at a price of ₱200.00 a piece but can charge ₱19,000 for a
bulk order of 150 shirts and ₱150 for each excess t-shirt after that. Use a piecewise
function to represent the cost in terms of the number of t-shirts purchased.

three hours and an extra ₱15.00 for each hour (or a fraction of it) after that. If you
park for more than 10 hours, you instead pay a flat rate of ₱250.00. Represent your
parking fee using the function f(h) where h is the number of hours you parked in the
mall.
3. A certain chocolate bar costs ₱45.00 per piece. However, if you buy more than 14
pieces, they will be marked down to a price of ₱41.00 per piece. Use a piecewise
function to represent the cost in terms of the number of chocolate bars bought.
