📘 Chapter 1: Resources – Full Notes (Class 8 Geography)

🔹 What is a Resource?

Definition: Anything that can be used to fulfill a need is called a resource.

It has utility (usefulness) and value (worth).

Example: Water is used for drinking → It is useful → So it is a resource.

🔹 Types of Resources:

1. Natural Resources:

Found in nature, not made by humans.

Examples: Water, air, sunlight, soil, forests, animals, minerals.

a. Based on origin:

Biotic (living): Plants, animals.

Abiotic (non-living): Soil, water, metals.

b. Based on renewability:

Renewable Resources: Can be reused or never finish.

Examples: Air, water, solar energy.

Non-renewable Resources: Can get used up.

Examples: Coal, petroleum, natural gas.

c. Based on distribution:

Ubiquitous: Found everywhere. (Example: air)

Localized: Found only in some places. (Example: gold)

d. Based on availability:

Actual resources: Known and used. (Example: coal in Jharkhand)

Potential resources: Exist, but not used yet. (Example: solar energy in Thar
Desert)

2. Human-Made Resources

Made by humans using natural resources.

Examples: Roads, bridges, machines, vehicles, buildings.

Created by technology.

2. Human Resources:

People themselves are a resource.

Their skills, knowledge, and abilities make them valuable.

More educated and healthy people = better human resource.

To develop human resources, we need:

Education

Health care

Training and skill development

🔹 Value of a Resource

Value is not always money. It means usefulness.

Example: A tree has value for wood, shade, fruits, and oxygen.

🔹 Resource Development

Process of improving resources to make them more useful.

Example: Water + Dam = Electricity → More useful.

🔹 Resource Conservation

Using resources wisely and carefully.

Not wasting them.

Saves them for future generations.
