TRACK MOTOR (Travel Motor) SERVICE – Volvo EC300DL
The track motor (also called travel motor or final drive motor) powers the tracks for movement. It includes a hydraulic motor, planetary gearbox, and brake
system. Regular inspection and maintenance are key to avoid breakdowns.
⚙️1. Track Motor Components
Component Function
Hydraulic Motor Converts hydraulic pressure to rotation
Planetary Gearbox Increases torque and reduces speed
Brake System Holds motor when machine stops
Travel Speed Solenoid Controls high/low speed mode
Case Drain Line Returns leaked oil to tank (pressure monitoring)
Final Drive Housing Contains gear oil (lubrication)
✅ 2. Track Motor Service Checklist
Task Frequency
Visual inspection for leaks Daily
Check gear oil level Every 250 hrs
Replace gear oil Every 1000 hrs
Inspect case drain pressure Every 500 hrs or if sluggish
Clean around fittings/connections Weekly
🛢️3. Final Drive Gear Oil Replacement
Oil Type:
SAE 80W-90 or 85W-140 Gear Oil (GL-5) (Check climate and Volvo spec)
Capacity:
Approx. 5–6 liters per side
Steps:
1. Park machine on level ground.
2. Remove top plug to check oil level.
3. Remove bottom plug to drain old oil completely.
4. Clean plugs and reinstall drain plug.
5. Refill oil from top plug hole until it reaches full level.
6. Reinstall top plug and clean the area.
⚠️Check for milky oil (water contamination) or metal particles.
🛠️4. Case Drain Line Inspection
Measure case drain pressure to assess internal wear.
High pressure indicates leaking motor seals or worn pistons.
Normal drain pressure is typically < 2 bar (30 psi), check in manual.
🧰 5. Common Problems & Fixes
Symptom Possible Cause Action
Machine not moving on one side Faulty travel motor / no hydraulic flow Test flow & pressure
Oil leaking from sprocket hub Worn seal or damaged motor housing Replace seals or rebuild
One track slow or weak Internal leakage or high case drain Measure pressure and inspect
Grinding noise Gear wear in final drive Open cover & inspect gears
Overheating motor Overloaded / blocked drain line Flush line & check filter
Can’t switch travel speed Faulty solenoid / wiring / pilot signal Check voltage & solenoid
🔩 6. Travel Motor Removal (If Rebuild or Replace)
1. Remove track chain from sprocket.
2. Disconnect hydraulic hoses (mark them for reassembly).
3. Unbolt motor from final drive housing.
4. Inspect O-rings and hydraulic fittings.
5. Send motor to rebuild shop if needed (piston motors are complex).
🛠️7. Tools Required
Socket set and torque wrench
Oil suction gun
Hydraulic pressure gauge kit
Hose cap kit (to prevent oil leaks during disconnection)
Cleaning rags, brushes
