Heather The pigeon.

Carla What?

Heather The pigeon. In the fields out the back of the school. Do you remember? Me and you.
On our way back home. That pigeon. With the broken wing.

Carla What’s the pigeon got to do with your husband?

Heather You didn’t just break its neck. End its misery. Did you? Nope. You wanted to pluck
it first. Snap its feet off. Use a stone to crush its beak. Take its eyes out with a stick. Then you
started stamping on it. Until it was all over the path. Blood, feathers, its insides. You could
have done it quickly.

Carla I’m going.

Carla goes to walk out again.

Heather I want you to kill Simon.

Carla What?

Heather Kill him.

Carla…?

Heather I’ve got ten thousand pounds in this bag.

Carla…

Heather And there’s another twenty once it’s done.

Heather waits for Carla to respond.

Carla What?

Heather I think I’ve made myself pretty clear.

CarlaI…

Heather He’s lied, he’s hurt, he’s emotionally abused me. I’ve had enough. I don’t just want
him out of my life I want him gone. Completely. And you’re the only person I know who can
do it. Kill him. Kill Simon. I want him dead.
They breathe.

Heather You’ve done it before.

Carla To a fucking pigeon! A pigeon! Are you mental?

Heather just stares at her.

Carla What’s wrong with you?

Heather Thirty grand.

Carla…

Heather You’re thinking about it aren’t you?

Carla No. Look. I don’t know who you think I am but I’m not that. OK? You’ve made a
mistake about this. I’m going.

Heather It’s a shit load of money.

Carla Well not really actually. Not really.

Heather Oh come now. It is when you have nothing.

Carla Well that would be none of your business.

Heather He’s been gambling again hasn’t he?

Carla What?

Heather Your bloke. What was it you said? ‘That stupid cunt has lost our rent money again’.

Carla…

Heather You should be a bit more careful who you befriend on Facebook yourself.

Carla You?

Heather He’s pretty fit though isn’t he? I was proud of him. And good with words. I must say
Carla – you have a filthy mind.

Carla is completely silent. She almost looks like she could cry.

Heather I’m sorry. I know you were hoping he could be your ticket out of this place. But
that’s why I’m here. Thirty grand would help wouldn’t it?

Carla You invented a whole profile just to chat dirty shit to me?

Heather I just needed to find out a bit more about you. Before I made this proposition. You
could be loaded for all I knew. I had make sure my offer wouldn’t be rejected.

Carla Well it will be. I can’t do it.

Heather Yeh you can.

Carla I’m not like that.

Heather Yeh you are.

Carla Why do you want him dead? Why don’t you just humiliate him or something? Put his
emails on the internet? Why kill him?

Heather It’s not just his emails.

Carla What is it then?

Heather Not your problem.

Carla Yes it is.

Heather No it isn’t. Look at you pretending. As if thirty grand isn’t something you’re
desperate for.

Heather pushes the bag closer towards Carla.

Carla You’re joking aren’t you? This is a joke. Are there people watching? Is this a TV
show?

Heather No.

Carla You’re mad then.

Heather Not really.

Carla I don’t know who you think I am…

Heather You’re scrabbling. In the dirt. You’re nothing. You’ve spent your life thinking
something will happen to make things better but it hasn’t. I think you even said online you’d
do anything to get out of here. For your kids. You clearly love them. It’s touching how much
you actually wanted to chat about them. Thirty grand could relocate you all. Without the
useless husband. Move to a different city. Rent somewhere nice. Start again. You need this.

Carla No I don’t.

Heather Yes you do.

Carla You’ve got me wrong.

Heather…

Carla You’re wrong. Fuck you. You’re wrong.

Carla leaves. Heather waits. Suddenly Carla returns and Heather looks up at her.

Carla Thirty grand?

Heather Yep.
Blackout.
