Plan

The document outlines a Year 3/4 maths planning lesson focused on relating 2D shapes to their properties, including regular and irregular shapes up to decagons. It includes success criteria for different ability levels, a counting activity, and a lesson structure with a starter, main activity, and plenary. The lesson aims to engage students through hands-on activities and games while assessing their understanding of shape properties.

WALT: Relate 2d shapes to properties. Context:

Success Criteria SEN: with support, relate 2d regular and irregular shapes to properties up to octagon.
BA: Locate examples of regular and irregular shapes, relating them to properties.
A: relate regular and irregular 2d shapes to properties up to decagon
AA: Use knowledge of properties of 2d shapes to make a game for others to play, including types of triangles.
Vocabulary: vertex, vertices side, sides shape isosceles right angled equilateral triangle square pentagon hexagon heptagon octagon decagon regular irregular

Counting activity: Teacher’s evaluation of lesson:

Starter:
Making shapes with elastic bands. Concentrate on different types of triangles and correct vocabulary (New
information)
Main:
Revise shapes and vocabulary, using 2d shapes and including types of triangles and regular and irregular
shapes. How many sides? How many vertices? Regular or irregular? Names?
Refer children to information around the room that they can use to help them.

Plenary:

State properties of 2d shapes. Can children tell which shape you are talking about?
E.g. I have 5 equal sides and 5 vertices. What am I?
I am a polygon with 3 straight sides. Two of the sides are the same length. What am I?
I have 5 sides but not all the sides are the same length. What am I?
