Braking System - Test

SMCS - 4250-081

Personal injury can result if the machine moves while testing.

If the machine begins to move during test, reduce the engine speed
immediately and engage the parking brake.

The following tests are used to determine if the service brake, the secondary brake and the parking
brake are functional. These tests are not intended to measure the maximum brake holding effort.
The brake holding effort that is required to sustain a machine at a specific engine rpm varies
depending on the machine. The variations are the differences in the engine setting, in the power
train efficiency, and in the brake holding ability.

During the test of the brakes, compare the previous engine rpm and the recent engine rpm. This
comparison will determine the system deterioration.

Service Brake Holding Ability Test

1. Fasten the seat belt before you test the brakes.

2. Check the area around the machine. Make sure that the machine is clear of personnel and
clear of obstacles.

3. Test the brakes on a dry, level surface.

4. Start the engine. Allow the air system to build up to the operating pressure.

5. Fully depress service brake control (2) to apply the service brakes.

6. Depress the parking brake reset valve (5).

7. Move the shift control lever (4) to the D position.

8. Use accelerator pedal (3) to increase the engine speed gradually to 1200 rpm. The machine
should not move.

9. Reduce the engine speed to idle. Move the shift control lever to the P position. Stop the
engine.

NOTICE

If the machine moved while testing the brakes, contact your

Caterpillar dealer.

Have the dealer inspect and, if necessary, repair the service brake
before returning the machine to operation.

Secondary Brake Holding Ability Test

1. Fasten the seat belt before you test the brakes.

2. Check the area around the machine. Make sure that the machine is clear of personnel and
clear of obstacles.

3. Test the brakes on a dry, level surface.

4. Start the engine and allow the air system to build up to the operating pressure.

5. Fully depress secondary brake control (1) to apply the secondary brakes.

6. Depress the parking brake reset valve.

7. Move the shift control lever to the D position.

8. Use accelerator pedal (3) to increase the engine speed gradually to 1200 rpm. The machine
should not move.

9. Reduce the engine speed to idle. Move the shift control lever to the P position. Stop the
engine.
