The following tests are used to determine if the service brake, the secondary brake and the parking brake are functional. These tests are not
intended to measure the maximum brake holding effort. The brake holding effort that is required to sustain a machine at a specific engine rpm
varies depending on the machine. The variations are the differences in the engine setting, in the power train efficiency, and in the brake holding
ability.
During the test of the brakes, compare the previous engine rpm and the recent engine rpm. This comparison will determine the system
deterioration.

2. Check the area around the machine. Make sure that the machine is clear of personnel and clear of obstacles.
4. Start the engine. Allow the air system to build up to the operating pressure.
5. Fully depress service brake control (2) to apply the service brakes.
8. Use accelerator pedal (3) to increase the engine speed gradually to 1200 rpm. The machine should not move.
9. Reduce the engine speed to idle. Move the shift control lever to the P position. Stop the engine.
NOTICE
If the machine moved while testing the brakes, contact your
Caterpillar dealer.

5. Depress button (26A) and depress button (26B) at the same time.
6. While both buttons are depressed, depress button (26C) to unlock the shift control lever (26). Move the shift control lever to the D position.
Note: The buttons can now be released and the parking brake will remain on.
7. Use accelerator pedal (3) to increase the engine speed gradually to 1200 rpm. The machine should not move.
8. Reduce the engine speed to idle. Move the shift control lever to the P position. Stop the engine.

4. Purge the air from the air system at the air tanks.
5. Make sure that the parking brake reset valve is engaged. The valve will pop up to the engaged position.
6. Start the engine and allow the air system to build up to the operating pressure.
8. Use accelerator pedal (3) to increase the engine speed gradually to 1200 rpm. The machine should not move.
9. Reduce the engine speed to idle. Move the shift control lever to the P position. Stop the engine.
10. To disengage the parking brake reset valve, push down the knob.
