(Jun's Playmate)

Black screen. Then narration.

(Church bells sfx)

Scene 1: Dining room.

Shot of a mantel full of Catholic statues. A body walks in front of camera. Transitions into
Calix putting food on the table.

Bert: Let’s pray first.

Calix sits. They all hold hands.

Bert: Thank You, Lord, for the food before us and the hands that prepared it. May it
nourish our bodies and bring us closer as a family. Amen.

Calix: Amen.

Junjun: Amen.

They eat.

Bert: You know, Jun, why don’t you start playing sports? You know, basketball or
badminton. It’s not good for a man to be so thin. The others will say we are not feeding you.

Junjun: I’m good, Pa. I’m too busy with school as it is.

Bert furrows eyebrows.

Bert: Try going to the gym and build some muscles!

Junjun: Pa—
Calix: Bert, let Jun decide what he wants to do. He’s old already.

Bert sighs and shook his head.

Bert: Fine, fine. Then try to visit the church, okay? I’ll go preach later. It will do you good to
listen to the Word of the Lord every once in a while.

Junjun smiles uncomfortably. Calix and Junjun shares a look.

Scene 2:
Characters: Bert and Erille
Action: Bert and Erille discuss Jun's behavior. Erille teases Bert.

Erille: Bert…haven’t you noticed anything…different about your son, Jun?

Bert: What do you mean? (Confused, brows furrowed)
Erille: Well…he doesn't quite act like other boys his age. (He pumps his eyebrows, teasing)

Bert looks at Yesha and Jun.

Bert: “I don’t get your point. He’s still young, that’s why. It’s normal.”
Erille: Well, Bert, he does seem to enjoy playing with the girls more. Look at him, he seems
to know how to apply make up more than my daughter! (Laughs)
Bert: What do you want to say, Erille? That my son is gay?”
Erille: Well, we never know. (Laughs, teasing)
Bert: My son is not gay.
Erille: If you say so.

Scene 3: Dinner
Setting: Jun’s room
Characters: Jun, Bert, and Jun's
Mother.
Action: The family is having dinner. Bert confronts Jun about what Erille told him on the
farm.

Jun is trying on a new dress and his make ups. The door suddenly opened.

Bert: Are you gay?

Jun: Pa?
Bert: I asked you—are you gay?
Jun: Yes... yes, I am!
Bert: No you are not! My son is not gay! You are a man, act like it!
Bert tears of Jun’s dresses and make ups. Jun cries. Bert lifts up his arm as if to hit Jun but
Calix enters and protects him.
Calix: Bert, stop this!
Bert: You are a man, Jun. (Bert points at Jun) It’s either you are a man or you are not my
son.
Calix: Bert!
Bert leaves, angry.

Marites 1: Oh, is that Bert’s son? He’s gay right? (Laughs)

Marites 2: Yeah, oh my goodness. God bless him.
Marites 3: Hoy, Bakla! Isang kembot naman jan!

They laughed. Insert shot with Junjun being sad with edited voices/whispers/laughters of
pangungutya/sexualization of a stereotypical gay.

Bullies: Bading! Bading! Bading!

(The bullies laugh at him)
Insert Bert's voice: It's either you're a man or you are not my son!

Scene 5:

Bert sets a paper bag on the table. Bert sees a photo album in their room. He took it and saw
young pics of Jun. Suddenly, Jun arrives distressed and crying. He thought no one was
home.
Jun wipes his face. Bert looks worried. He looks away, feigning nonchalance.
Bert: What happened?
Jun doesn't reply.
Bert: What happened to you?
Jun: Will you love me if I'm not gay, Pa?
Close up shot to the young pic of Jun in Bert's hands.
Bert sighs.
Bert: You know, Jun… I…
Bert looks pained.
Bert: I'm sorry for what I did the other day… I know you may never forgive me but… I do love
you, anak. You are my son. Your Mama and I prayed for you for years, you know that, right?
Jun looks like he might cry again. Jun nods. Bert pats the seat beside him. Jun follows. Bert
gives him the paperbag. They have brand new makeup and a brand new dress.
Jun: Pa…
Bert: I'm sorry for ruining your makeup. Your Mama said you bought it with your own
money. I hope you can forgive me anak.
They hug. Jun sobs.
Bert (whispers): I love you, anak. No matter what.
Jun: I love you, Pa.
Wide shot of them hugging. Then church bells sfx. Then narration.
Narration (Bert): John 13:34 says: Jesus states, "A new command I give you: Love one
another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
