Lesson Plan – Fractions (Sample 2)

Subject: Mathematics

Topic: Fractions

Class: Primary / Middle School (adjustable)

Duration: 40 minutes

Teaching Method: Activity-based + ELPS (Experience–Language–Pictorial–Symbolic)

1. General Objectives

 To develop understanding of fractions as equal parts of a whole.

 To enhance logical thinking and problem-solving skills.

 To connect fractions with real-life situations.

2. Specific Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

1. Define a fraction.

2. Identify numerator and denominator.

3. Represent fractions using shapes and real-life objects.

4. Differentiate between proper and improper fractions.

5. Solve simple problems using fractions.

3. Teaching–Learning Materials

 Chart paper, fraction strips, colored paper cutouts (circle, rectangle, square), chalk/board.

 Multimedia/flashcards (optional).

4. Previous Knowledge

Students are familiar with division, sharing, and equal grouping.

5. Introduction (5 minutes)

 Teacher shows a chocolate bar/pizza picture and asks:

“If I divide this into 4 equal parts and eat 1 part, what fraction is left?”

 Students respond → Teacher introduces the term fraction.

6. Presentation (15 minutes)

 Experience (E): Use real objects (apple, chocolate, roti) and divide them.

 Language (L): Introduce terms – fraction, numerator, denominator.

 Pictorial (P): Draw shapes on board, shade parts (½, ⅓, ¼, etc.).

 Symbolic (S): Write fractions in number form (1/2, 1/3, 3/4).

7. Development (10 minutes)

 Differentiate proper fractions (numerator < denominator) and improper fractions

(numerator ≥ denominator).

 Practice with examples:

o Identify fraction of shaded parts.

o Solve: Out of 12 students, 5 are girls. What fraction are girls?

8. Activity (5 minutes)

 Group activity: Students use cutouts/fraction strips to represent 2/3, 3/4, etc.

 Quick quiz: Match shapes with correct fraction.

9. Recapitulation (3 minutes)

Ask oral questions:

1. What do we call the number on top in a fraction?

2. What fraction is 2 parts shaded out of 5?

3. Give an example of an improper fraction.

10. Evaluation (2 minutes)

 Worksheet / Blackboard sums:

1. Shade ½ of a rectangle.

2. Write fraction for 7 red balls out of 10.

3. Convert 5/4 into mixed fraction.

11. Homework
 Draw and shade a shape to represent: 2/5, 3/6, 4/8.

 Write 3 real-life examples of fractions.

addition/subtraction), so you have variety for practice?
