START
At the start of the race, where the field of 20 horses is shuffling for position, one of the fan favorites, 5-1 Union Rags, gets bumped and squeezed back, forcing jockey Julien Leparoux to steady him. The speed horses Bodemeister and Trinniberg are clawing their way to the front. Eventual winner Ill Have Another, starting from the far outside No. 19 post, is angling toward the rail.

FIRST TURN
Ill Have Another
By the time the horses hit the first turn and head onto the backstretch, the field typically spreads out. The 4-1 favorite Bodemeister is out front, winging it through some of the fastest quarter-miles in Derby history. Trinniberg, as expected, is not far behind and Ill Have Another is just about six lengths off the pace and on the move.

While the speed demons are doing their thing, jockey Mario Gutierrez has 15-1 Ill Have Another sitting comfortably just off the pace. No one is really pressuring Bodemeister, as he takes the field to the half in 45.39 seconds and three-quarters in1:09.80. But Ill Have Another is gaining momentum and gamely pulling Gutierrez along as he splits horses before the far turn.

INTO THE STRETCH

Bodemeister lets out a notch and seems to be not letting up as the horses hit the long stretch for the run to the wire in the Run for the Roses. Ill Have Another is really flying out in the middle of the track, with no horses in his way. Hes the leader of the pack that includes Creative Cause and Liaison, who are also headed toward decent finishes.
