NETWORKING 101

Basic Computer Networking

Christopher G. Marmol
Associate Professor IV, ASCOT
What is Network?

• A network is two or more computer systems that are

linked by a transmission medium and share one or more
protocols that enable them to exchange data.
• You can think of any network in terms of nodes and
links. The nodes are devices that send, receive, and
forward data and the links are the communications
pathways between them. –CompTIA

• A network connects computers, mobile phones,

peripherals, and even IoT devices.

• Switches, routers, and wireless access points are the

essential networking basics equipment.

• Through them, devices connected to your network can

communicate with one another and with
other networks, like the Internet.
Computer Networking

• A computer network is a set of

computers connected together for
the purpose of:

1. Sharing resources
2. Sharing of information
Types:
Network Topology
IP Address and Network Classes

• IP Address or simply IP is a
unique address that
identifies a device on the
Internet or a local
network.
• It allows a system to be
recognized by other
systems connected via the
Internet protocol
(TCP/IP).
IP Address and Network Classes

• There are two primary

types of IP address
formats used today
1. IPv4
2. IPv6
IP Address Configurations

• Static
• Dynamic
Network Cables Types
Network Connections:

1.Wired
2.Wireless
NIC (Network Interface Controller)

• (NIC, also known as

a network interface
card, network
adapter, LAN adapter
or physical network
interface, and by
similar terms)

• is a computer
hardware component
that connects a
computer to a
computer network.

Patch Cable

• A patch cable, patch

cord or patch lead is
an electrical or optical
cable used to connect
("patch in") one
electronic or optical
device to another for
signal routing.
