Who Is Team Maureen?

Team Maureen was founded in memory of Maureen Ellen (Duffey) Russo, formerly of Hudson, Mass., who lost her battle to cervical cancer in 2006. She was first diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2003 and received treatment at DanaFarber Cancer Institute. In remission for almost three years, the cancer returned in 2006. The aggressive form of cervical cancer took a toll on Russo, despite her endurance and courageous battle for six months. She passed away in December 2006 at the age of 37. She left behind her high school sweetheart, Mike, whom she married in 1993, two young children and an extended group of family and friends.

To keep her memory alive, Russos husband and family, joined the PMC and formed Team Maureen in 2007. Team Maureen is made up of 32 cyclists, including Eileen Duffey-Lind, a pediatric oncology nurse at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute who understands firsthand the impact of funds raised through the PMC. We wanted to do something positive keep Maureens spirit alive, says DuffeyLind. Maureen was very active, competing in gymnastics and participating in track, soccer, and cheerleading so we thought riding in the PMC would be the perfect way to honor her. 2011 was our best year yet, with 32 riders we raised $101,000 making the 5 year total over $370,000. With the fifth year anniversary (Dec 15th) of Maureen's passing, we gain solace thinking of this amazing group of people honoring her life and keeping her spirit alive. We are very excited for PMCs 33rd anniversary ride.

What Is The Pan Mass Challenge?

The Pan Mass Challenge is a 1 or 2 day bike challenge that raises money to fight cancer. The bike routes are about 90 miles long. While there are many athletic fundraising events, the PMC is arguably the most successful in terms of the money raised and the percentage of funds it contributes directly to fight cancer. In 2008, 100% of all funds raised by PMC riders went directly to the Jimmy Fund. Not one cent of any dollar raised was used for administrative and organizational expenses. The PMC is considered among the leanest of fundraising organizations in the nation today. 2009 marks the 30th Anniversary of the PMC, which has grown since its start in 1980 with 36 riders who raised a total of $10,000 to 5,000 riders who raised a total of $35 million in 2008.
