SLICKLINE

Slickline, also known as 'Wire', refers to a range of intervention activities in oil wells that involve introducing tools through a specially designed steel line to maintain production levels. The Slickline unit operates using a hydraulic system with various components such as a weight indicator for measuring tension and an odometer for measuring depth. Tools used in Slickline operations are categorized into surface and subsoil tools, with surface tools facilitating the introduction of equipment under pressure without killing the well.

1. DEFINITION

Slickline (or 'Wire' as it is commonly called in the field) is a service that

loans to companies operating oil fields. Basically
these two words encompass a broad range of activities, commonly
called "interventions", within the oil wells. Essentially
The work consists of introducing tools and/or devices into the wells.

of oil, water, gas or injectors, both in their initial completion, as
during their useful life to maintain them at production or injection levels
efficient and/or maintain control over the deposits, since all the
operations are carried out through the production pipeline.

The Slickline unit is powered by a hydraulic system, on which this unit

to the set of tools so that they can be inserted into the bottom of the well to
perform the corresponding operation.
2.1. TENSION

The element used for measuring tension is the weight indicator. It is a

equipment designed to obtain the exact weight measurement of a tool, its
the operation is hydraulic, it is composed of three basic elements which are:

Lung or cell
Hose
Dial or manometer

According to your requirement, they are available in sizes from 0 to 2000 lbs, 0 to 3000
lbs and from 0 to 5000 lbs.

As its name indicates, it provides the total load or voltage at which it

the cable is found subjected and is especially important in heavy work,
when tools are handled or during hammering operations of the line.

He is responsible for sending the hydraulic signal through the hose to the dial.
It has a diaphragm inside that contracts or expands depending on the operation.

At its bottom, it has a drainage valve that allows for calibrating the equipment.
in case of diaphragm replacement, once calibrated, the existing space in the
The accommodation must be equal to 9/16" for its reading to be correct.

The load cell (Pulmón) is hung from the little tree using a chain, and the
signal is transmitted through hydraulic fluid via a hose to the
signal recorder (clock).

The load cell has two connections, one for hanging the floor pulley and the other
to hook the chain that hangs from the little tree, so that when passing the
cable through the pulley forms a 90-degree angle.

2.1.2. HOSE

It serves as a link between the lung and the dial, housing the necessary fluid inside.
for its operation, the type of fluid most used is a grade 15 oil,
same used in hydraulic gearboxes, if the grade of the

Indicators from 0 to 2000 lbs a length no greater than 20 meters and for indicators of
0 to 5000lbs at a maximum of 30 meters, its ID should not be greater than 1/2".

2.1.3. DIAL THE MANOMETER

He is in charge of translating the information sent by the lung through the

hose, inside it houses a calibrated measuring system for the
specific job requirements, their reading ranges vary between 0 to 2000
lb., 0 to 3000 lb. and 0 to 5000 lb.

It has a purge system on its top, a dial gauge, and a

fluid intake regulator, which is used to calibrate the sensitivity of the
reading.

2.2. DEPTH

The element used for measuring depth when performing a

Slickline operation is the odometer.
It is the system that, combined with a set of pulleys, achieves the measurement of the cable
that is being lowered or taken out of the well, and in this way determine the
the depth at which our tool is located, the odometer is a clock

it is called a counting pulley.

The diameter of this pulley is determined by the diameter of the cable to be used, by
example, for:

Smooth cable 0.092" the pulley must be at least 12"

Smooth cable 0.108” or 0.125” the pulley should be at least 15”

The odometers can give the reading in feet or meters, depending on the place of

This pulley game, in addition to allowing the reading of the amount of wire that
exit or enter, allows the operator to organize the wire that comes in

in the drum.

located at the front of the unit. The wire is secured inside the
main pulley by two smaller diameter or adjustment pulleys, which prevent the

unexpected or when the cable is being wound, they also allow for having a
more accurate reading.
2.3. WIRE

Due to their resistance and flexibility, they allow for well services, in accordance with
the maximum depths, maintaining productivity and well pressures
under operating conditions. There are two types:

Monofilament wires
Multifilament wires

2.3.1. MONOFILAMENT WIRES

They are the thinnest steel lines used in underground operations, due to their
resistance and flexibility. Its diameter is 0.092”, 0.105” and 0.108”. Its tension of

There are no high pressures), lower extension pipe and others.
2.4. CONTROLS

The Slickline unit is powered by a hydraulic system, on which the unit operates.
there is a drum mounted, on which the steel wire cable is wound. This cable passes
through a pulley system and via a lubricator before connecting to the string
of tools and thus be able to be inserted into the bottom of the well to carry out the
corresponding operation.

3. TOOLS

The tools used in a Slickline operation can be divided

it is two large groups:

Surface tools
Subsoil tools

3.1 SURFACE TOOLS

The surface equipment used at the locations during Slickline operations

allows the introduction and running of tools into the wells under pressure without having to
to kill them. The surface equipment required for the development of the
Slickline operations mainly depend, in addition to the work to be done,
from the well pressure, as well as the size of the pipe. The larger equipment
important are:
Lubricators
Press Estopa
Blowout Preventer (BOP) Valves
Power Unit
Wire unit
Pulley rig
Horse head
Crane
