Question of Fluid Mechanics Exam
1. In the figure shown, the liquids at A & B are water and the manometer liquid is oil
(sp. gr. = 0.80). (a) If h1 = 0.3 m, h2 = 0.2 m and h3 = 0.6 m, determine PA –PB. (b)
If PB = 50 kN/m2 and the barometric pressure is 76 cm of Hg (sp. gr. = 13.6); find
the pressure at A in m of water absolute.
2. At a depth of 7 km in the ocean, the pressure is 71.6 MPa. Assume, a specific weight at the surface of 10.05
kN/m3 & an average bulk modulus of elasticity of 2.34 GPa for that pressure range. (a) Find the change in
specific volume between the surface & 7 km; (b) Find the specific volume at 7 km; (c) Find the specific
weight at 7 km.
3. The system in figure is at 70°F. If the pressure at point A is 2900 lb/ft 2, determine the pressure at points B,
C & D.
4. Circular-arc tainter gate ABC having arc radius 6m and height 6m pivots about point O. For the position
shown, determine (a) the hydrostatic force on the gate (per meter of width into the paper) and (b) the line
of action of resultant force.
5. A triangular plate of 1 m base & 1.5 m altitude is immersed in water. The plane of the plate is inclined at
30° with free surface of water & the base is parallel to & at a depth of 2m from the free surface. Find the
pressure force on the plate & the position of the center of pressure.

6. Water flows through a circular orifice 2.5 cm in diameter in the side of a tank. The constant head of water
above the center of the orifice is 75 cm. The coordinates of the center line of the jet are 30 cm horizontally
from the vena contracta & 3.2 cm vertically below the center of the orifice. The discharge from the orifice
is 1.186 L/s. Find the coefficients Cd, Cv .
7. An oil of specific gravity 0.9 & viscosity 0.06 poise is flowing through a pipe of diameter 200 mm at the rate
of 60 L/s. Find the head loss due to friction for a 500 m length of pipe. Find the power required to maintain
this flow.
8. A river model is constructed to a horizontal scale of 1: 1000 & a vertical scale of 1: 100. A model discharge
of 0.1 m3/s would correspond to a discharge in the prototype of what magnitude?
9. Find the velocity, V at point 1 and the stagnation pressure at point 2.
10. In figure, both nozzles discharge water horizontally into the atmosphere at 30 fps. Find 𝜽 so that the
resultant force on the unit is along the axis of the 8” diameter pipe.
