The Zephyr Hat
Abbreviations:
● CO- Cast On
● SM- Stitch Marker
● K- Knit
● P- Purl
● LL- (Left Lean stitch) - Skip first stitch on your left needle. Knit into back loop of
second stitch, keeping that stitch on your left needle. Next, use your right needle to
slip first stitch purlwise (with yarn in back) and drop second stitch to complete your
LL stitch. (See video link in notes section and picture tutorial at end of pattern for
reference)
● SSK- (Slip, Slip, Knit)- Slip 1st stitch knitwise (with yarn in back). Slip second stitch
knitwise ( with yarn in back). Then, insert left needle into front of both stitches and
knit them together. (This will give the look of a left leaning decrease)
● K2TOG- Knit 2 stitches together
● CN- Circular Knitting Needle
● DPNs- Double Pointed Needles

Materials:
● Yarn/Needles- Listed with Specified Pattern
● Tapestry needle
● Measuring tape
● Scissors
● Stitch marker
● Round counter (optional)
● Pom (optional)
● DPNs size 13 for super bulky, or size 11 for bulky (optional for decrease)
Notes:
● Please read pattern in full before beginning.
● It will be helpful not to knit too tightly to make LL stitches easier.
● Super Bulky-If you are a loose knitter, you may want to stay at a size 11/8 mm CN for
the body. If you are a tight knitter, you may want to use a size 15/10 mm CN for the
body.
● Bulky- If you are a loose knitter, You may want to use a size 10.5 /6.5 mm CN for the
body or stop at 3 total repeats instead of 4.

This stitch is slightly different than what you might be familiar with. Please
follow my specific tutorial for LL stitch.**

Pattern: Super Bulky
Method:
● Knitting
Skill Level:
● Advanced beginner
Gauge:
● 4x4”/ 10 x 10 cm = 11 stitches x 14 rows in stockinette ( Malabrigo Rasta, size 13 CN)
Yarn/Needles:
● Super Bulky Yarn-Malabrigo Rasta was used for this pattern (Approximately 80 yds),
but any super bulky size 6 yarn will work.
● Circular knitting needles- Size 11/8 mm, 16 inch and size 13/9 mm, 16 inch
Size:
● Adult, 9” ht x 8” w

Brim
● Using size 11/8 mm CN, CO 48 stitches. I used the long tail CO method, but you can
use whatever method you are comfortable with. Place your SM. Join in round, being
careful not to twist your stitches.
● Rounds 1-7: *K1, P1*, repeat from * to * to end of round. (48)
Body
*Switch to size 13/9 mm CN
Round 8: *K7, P1*, repeat from * to * to end of round. (48)
Round 9: *LL, LL, K3, P1*, repeat from * to * to end of round. (48)
Round 10: *K7, P1*, repeat from * to * to end of round. (48)
Round 11: * K1, LL, LL, K2, P1*, repeat from * to * to end of round. (48)
Round 12: *K7, P1*, repeat from * to * to end of round. (48)
Round 13: *K2, LL, LL, K1, P1*, repeat from * to * to end of round. (48)
Round 14: *K7, P1*, repeat from * to * to end of round. (48)
Round 15: *K3, LL, LL, P1*, repeat from * to * to end of round. (48)
Repeat Rounds 8-15 two more times for a total of 3 cable turns. You are now ready
to start round 32.

Decrease
* Switch to DPNs if you choose to. I was able to complete the decrease comfortably while still
using my CN.
* At this point, your hat should measure approximately 8.5” measuring from the bottom of the brim.
● Round 33: *SSK, SSK, K1, K2TOG, P1*, repeat * to * to end of round. (30)
● Round 34: *SSK, K2TOG, P1*, repeat * to * to end of round. (18)
● Round 35: *SSK, P1*, repeat * to * to end of round. (12)
● Cut long tail (approximately 8”). Using your tapestry needle, thread tail through
remaining stitches. Cinch tight to close the top of the hat. Weave in ends to secure.
Top with optional pom.

Method:
● Knitting

Gauge:
● 4x4”/ 10 x 10 cm = 12 stitches x 16 rows in stockinette (Malabrigo Chunky , size 11 CN)
Yarn/Needles:
● Bulky Yarn-Malabrigo Chunky was used for this pattern (Approximately 90 yds), but
any bulky size 5 yarn will work.
● Circular knitting needles- Size 10/6 mm, 16 inch and size 11/8 mm, 16 inch
Size:
● Adult, 9” ht x 7.5” w

Brim
● Using size 10/6 mm CN, CO 64 stitches. I used the long tail CO method, but you can
use whatever method you are comfortable with. Place your SM. Join in round, being
careful not to twist your stitches.
● Rounds 1-9: *K1, P1*, repeat from * to * to end of round. (64)
Body
*Switch to size 11/8 mm CN
Round 10: *K7, P1*, repeat from * to * to end of round. (64)
Round 11: *LL, LL, K3, P1*, repeat from * to * to end of round. (64)
Round 12: *K7, P1*, repeat from * to * to end of round. (64)
Round 13: * K1, LL, LL, K2, P1*, repeat from * to * to end of round. (64)

LL (Left Lean Stitch) Photo Tutorial
1) Insert right needle through back loop of second stitch
2) Complete your knit stitch while keeping stitch on your left needle
3) Bring right needle down and slip first stitch purlwise
4) Let second stitch that you kept on left needle fall off needle
