1.0 ntroduction
Liting beam design to BS2853 is an analysis and design sotware package or Ciil &
Structural Lngineers. 1his manual has been prepared to allow user to install the sotware
and as a guide or new users on how to use the application.
2.0 8ystem Requirements

lollowing are the minimum requirements or running the application on a PC. Systems
with increased memory, processor power etc. will result in enhanced perormance.

Although the spreadsheet can be used on alternatie platorms, problems may be
experienced when running the program, such as dialog boxes being truncated due to
wrong resolution size, ,VGA 600x 480,. Graphs and VBA commands may also become
corrupted when the program is executed within the wrong Microsot operating system or
Lxcel ersion. Users should reer to the trouble-shooting guide or urther inormation.

3.0 nstalling Lifting Beam

Liting beam can be installed either as a download orm the structure-sot website,
,www.structure-sot.com,, or ia an installation CD. \ou must install liting beam while
running \indows or the application iles to be transerred and installed to your hard
disk correctly. \ou may require administration rights i you are trying to install Liting
beam to a stand alone PC or one that is connected to a local area network, ,LAN,, or a
wide area network, ,\AN,. I you encounter administration rights problems speak to
your I1 administrator.

MPORTANT NOTE l

ncluding the flange plate in the analysis will result in the
calculations adding the flange thickness and plate thickness
together to provide a composite thickness of the flange. n order for
this to be a valid design assumption, close attention to the detailing
of the connection needs to be considered as well as the implications
of using a localised thickened flange.

Users are advised to use this option with caution.

The lifting beam software does not undertake a splice design as
this is out with the scope of the application.

EXAMPLE

A common problem that may be encountered is when the flange
width of the section size considered is out with the table limits set in
table 3 of B82853.

Consider a column section size of 305 x 305 x 97 UC is adopted for
design. The application will report an error since the value of C is out
with range limits of the table and a different section size will need to
be adopted before the application can proceed with the design of the

Application Limitations

1he application has certain limitations that may or may not be apparent to the user.
1hese hae been itemised as ar as possible in the list below. Lery eort has been made
to address the salient points, but the list is not exhaustie.

\heel gauge is based on predeined criteria i.e. edge, , ', etc. o beam lange width.
No allowance is made or actual wheel gauge.

\heel centres are considered at preset locations or our wheel trolleys - no adjustment
can be made in the application to replicate actual wheel centre positions.

Moments and shear orces are calculated based on standard ormula or preset load
conditions i.e. max moment taken as mid span or simply supported & suspended beams,
beam end or cantileer beams.
