Carrongrange School
Dear Parents/Carers, Welcome to our end of May newsletter. I hope you are enjoying the recent good weather at last!! As you will know this last month is extremely busy, full of trips and events, and this year we also have a great deal of Olympic activity and activities linked with the Jubilee. Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Assembly on 30th April we enjoyed having Tam Baillie, Childrens Commissioner for Scotland, who helped us to launch our new School Values and Rules. The week following the assembly kept the theme of values and rules very much in mind with a visit from Steve Frew (Commonwealth Gold Medallist) whose skills and enthusiasm led to a wonderful display by pupils, showing all of our school values and rules. The week ended with another Assembly, led by Andy McKechnie, who again reminded us of the Olympic values and how they link to our own. Your support in helping our pupils to understand and follow our new values and rules is very much appreciated. At the time of writing, our Blackpool revellers are enjoying a great residential once again, huge thanks to staff who give up so much of their own time to make such wonderful events possible. Our first Duke of Edinburgh overnight expeditions are planned for June too lets hope the sun shines and the midges are somewhere else! We are enjoying welcoming our new S1 pupils, who are visiting the school just now as part of their induction we wish them all well and hope that they will be very happy as Carrongrange pupils. Fundraising continued thanks go to Chris Allen, from Enjoy-a-ball, who is working very hard, organising the raffle in aid of our school funds. The Raffle will be drawn at our Assembly on 29th May - we look forward to seeing you then! Free School Meals a gentle reminder that Free School Meals begin in August. Please ensure that your children have sufficient funds to cover their lunches between now and the end of term. Our end of term events include our Enterprise Assembly at 2.00 pm on Friday, 22nd June, and our Prizegiving on Wednesday 27th June at 9.30 am. School then closes at 1.00 pm on Friday, 29th June (please check with Transport providers about the time to expect your children home). Further details about individual class trips etc. will follow. I hope you enjoy reading the rest of this newsletter, and we look forward to seeing you at our forthcoming Parents Nights and Assembly on Tuesday. Best wishes Gillian Robertson Headteacher

Regional Track and Field Championships We had 32 pupils compete at Grangemouth last Wednesday. We competed in 100m, 200m, 400m, high jump, shot putt and relay. We won medals in most events and as we were the school with the most points overall, we won the Denis Shovelin Trophy. All pupils put in performances to be proud of and several won in personal best times/distances. Several of our pupils are members of the Falkirk Flyers Athletics Club and train on a regular basis.

Looking After your Childs Eyesight Most children do not require to wear spectacles but all children can benefit from an eye examination. During a full check-up, the vision in each eye, muscle balance and the eyes health are assessed. Its also a very good idea to have colour vision checked because 1 in 8 boys show some level of colour vision deficiency which may make learning at school more difficult. Children and young people dont always realise that they have a vision problem especially if it only affects one eye. Some children in Forth Valley will have had pre-school screening and all children have a quick vision check at primary one but a full eye exam can detect a lot more. Its easy to do and all eye exams are paid for by the NHS. Eye examinations can be carried out by any local community optician. Gymnastics We were very honoured to have a visit from Steve Frew, Commonwealth Gold Medallist on Wednesday 2nd May. Pupils had the opportunity to join him in gymnastics sessions in the morning and take part in a display in the afternoon.
