Cyclotrons in Proton Therapy Comparison

The document discusses different types of particle accelerators used in radiation therapy. It describes how the first cyclotron was developed by Ernest Lawrence in 1929 and could produce deuteron beams of 16 MeV. Cyclotrons produce proton beams of up to 160 MeV for radiation treatment. Synchrotrons can produce higher energy proton beams of 6 GeV. Cyclotron and synchrotron particle accelerators are used to generate proton and other particle beams for treating cancers like brain, spinal, eye, head and neck, lung, prostate, and other pelvic cancers. There are about 130 cyclotrons currently in operation worldwide.

Benefits of Proton Beam Vs X-ray Beam Radio Therapy

Proton beams can be conformed and controlled more easily and precisely. Less dispersion within tissue for proton beams. Proton beams leave the protons at the target.

Types of Cancers Typically Treated Today

Conformal Beam Therapy is best utilized for tumors that are isolated and hard or impossible to slice out.
Cancerous tumors of the brain and spinal chord (any tumor touching the spinal chord) Eye diseases and cancers Some cancers of the head and neck including nasal Lung cancer (non-small cell) Prostate cancer and other pelvic cancer
