Scopes Schedules Estimates Charges

Breakdown can be based on: Contract strategy (disciplines) Areas of the project Sequence of work Other

WBS Tips
Name work packages (WBS elements) for hard deliverables
Something you can lay on the table

Limit the duration of work packages to one or two weeks

Why Do a Schedule, Anyway?

Why Do a Schedule, Anyway?

Eliminate or reduce uncertainty Improve efficiency of the operation Obtain better understanding of the project objectives Provide a basis for monitoring and controlling the work

Steps to Develop a Schedule

1. 2. Develop WBS for project Assign durations to activities associated with each work package in the WBS Enter durations in the scheduling program, not start and finish dates Designate selected activities as milestones 3. Develop the logic for the schedule Define the predecessor and successor activities for each activity on the schedule 4. Assign resources to the activities 5. Select report formats for updating and tracking progress

Schedule formats
PERT (Project Evaluation and Review Technique)
Requires three estimates of duration for each activity in the schedule Results in a statistical probability of the likelihood of achieving the schedule as planned Calculates a critical path
Longest duration path through the schedule Dictates the earliest completion date

Schedule formats
CPM (Critical Path Method)
Only one duration assigned to each activity Calculates a critical path
