Social Networking & The Business

Through my project I want to explore how social networking helps business in the art sector. I will look at different social networking sites and how they can be used to promote a business and sell. This project will also show how artists can make a living and how social networking is influencing the younger generation into selling art online.

The main sites I will look at

Etsy Facebook Ebay Amazon

6hat inspired you to start your businessG I have always been into art and making thingsA I started making flower crowns first when popular teen shops like ?ew 5ook 8nd Top shop started to sell them after being inspired by &inger 5ana :el @ey. !ow did you start your business and how hard was it to startG 9efore starting my business I had a trial where I made a few flower crowns giving them to friends to see if they were good enough to sell. The feedback I received was positive and this gave me enough confidence to set up a selling account on a art based selling website called 3Etsy. The website was easy to use and I soon got used to making and selling flower crowns. I now sell personaliCed flower crowns and also have branched out into jewellery. !ow Important is social networking to your business &ocial ?etworking was so important for the selling of my productsA without it I wouldnt have had to confidence to sell anywhere else. It allowed me to get my business out and allow people to view my products online and get more views on my business.

I chose to shoot these photos in the location were work was being done after being inspired by 8rnold ?ewman. 8lso like 8rnold I chose for the flowers to be the main subject within the portrait and the florist in the background. I didnt feel comfortable with going into a strangers house alone so I waited for the holidays and went with my mother. lorist was happy for portraits to be taken and made shoot very enjoyable.

I like the use of colourful flowers and also think this looks effective with colour film.

I said, I dont feel like digital is quite here yet. And he said, I agree, then he turned and looked at me and said, But well get there. Jobs gave Watson about an hourmuch longer than he ever gave most photographers for a portrait session. [...] I said, Think about the next project you have on the table, and I asked him also to think about instances where people have challenged him. If you look at that shot, you can see the intensity. It was my intention that by looking at him, that you knew this guy was smart, Watson says, adding, I heard later that it was his favorite photograph of all time.

Critical 8ppraisal
project was based on artists in medway and also artists that use social networking to sell, Network or for portfolio work, throughout my research i have gained a knowledge that has even allowed me to improve my own website. The information i have learnt has fuelled my images and i am happy with my final outcome, even though i like my final images getting to the stage to take the final images has been a problem and this project has pushed me out of my comfort zone when talking to people specially with the model i am taking images of. A key skill i found i had to improve on within this project was getting in contact with the people i wanted to shoot and this did cause me a lot of trouble at the start of the project however i soon resolved the problem and pushed myself to seek people by using social networking and email. Another problem i faced when organising shoots was people cancelling on me last minute, this often caused a big problem for me and i just learned to move on and find a alternative. The link between art and social networking is strong and through my research i have found out just how important the internet can be to network and share not just photographers work but artists, fashion designers and many more. If i had the chance to progress this unit further i would find more artists in medway that use social network and also i would have printed a few more prints for example i would have printed two of Dawns Flowers.
My

This project most importantly has taught me how important it is to network with other artists, photographers, fashion designers, stylists, makeup artists and so many more this is made easier with the use of social networking.

'y still life will be based on the myth of beautyA how images of beauty can be used against us and the social pressure to look good. I will look into topics like image manipulationA @etouching and K8irbrushingK. I will investigate how this can change our idea of beauty and how we feel we should look.I plan to use manipulation within my images for my still lifeAfor example i could use natural objects like flowers or fruit and manipulate them to signify how we change ourselves to fit a certain lookA i will look into symbolism also.

6ithin this image i liked how the image seemed innocent and pretty however if the signs within the image are read correctly the meaning of the image can completely change and mean a whole new thing. or example Ean :avidsC has painted a beautiful image but this is only when the persons attention is drawn to the flowers. 5ooking closer at the image we start to notice small signs and little significant objects that have a special meaning within the still life. This drew my attention because i wanted a similar theme within my still life. 8t first glance i want my still life to be beautiful but when analysed deeper it can have a more complex meaning.

'uch like Ean :avidsC i chose this piece because it communicates beauty even though the image has a far deeper meaning and can be read in a completely different way if we read the right signs.

Manitas
In the arts, vanitas is a type of symbolic work of art especially associated with still life painting in the 16th and 17th centuries, though also common in other places and periods. The latin word means vanity and loosely translated corresponds to the meaninglessness of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits.

Common vanitas symbols include skulls, which are a reminder of the certainty of death; rotten fruit, which symbolizes decay; bubbles, which symbolize the brevity of life and suddenness of death; smoke, watches, and hourglasses, which symbolize the brevity of life; and musical instruments, which symbolize brevity and the ephemeral nature of life. Fruit, flowers and butterflies can be interpreted in the same way, and a peeled lemon, as well as accompanying seafood was, like life, attractive to look at, but bitter to taste. There is debate among art historians as to how much, and how seriously, the vanitas theme is implied in still-life paintings without explicit imagery such as a skull. As in much moralistic genre painting the enjoyment evoked by the sensuous depiction of the subject is in a certain conflict with the moralistic message

The research i put into vanitas proved to be very important within my still lifeAmany Manitas showed themes of death and decay through everyday objects and signs for example the use of skulls and dead fruit. The research i did into vanitas still life was essential within my project because i wanted my still life to have a more complex meaning the more a person analysed the image.

Critical 8ppraisal
When starting research for my still life project i had a clear theme that i knew i wanted to do, this was due to my topic being a strong and not uncommon illness or issue with many people around my age. With even myself being subject to bullying because of looks and appearance this project was really been shaped by my own personal experience with beauty and how we see ourselves or how we think we should look. My own personal experience has definitely fuelled my research into my topic and i found i have looked at this from a point of view that understands what its like and know how painful/scary of a topic this subject can really be. I knew before starting this project how much the media is fuelling our beauty myths but after the research done throughout this project i have became much more aware of other issues leading off from my topic like self harm and eating disorders and how serious this issue is becoming. I wanted my images to reflect my topic in a way that many people who have experienced having issues with their self like low self esteem etc could understand for example one of my favourite song lyrics is

The mirror can lie Doesn't show you what's inside And it, it can tell you you're full of life It's amazing what you can hide Just by putting on a smile

,y image re'lected this in a way that we all try to hide who we are+ whether this be by makeu( or e.(ensi!e clothing+ when i 'irst imagined my theme i instantly had a 'ew ideas o' imagery within my head that i wanted to achie!e and this was my mask idea to show how we o'ten co!er oursel!es to hide who we are/ Analysis o' shoot - do like my 'inal (rint howe!er i' gi!en the chance to do this again i would ha!e +2 e.(erimented more with di''erent materials and colours also looking into
