Evaluation question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or

challenge forms and conventions of real life media products?

On

my front cover the masthead on my magazine follows the convention of a typical masthead
along the top of the page and is the biggest text on the page. It is colourful and catches the eye of
audiences. It follows the colour scheme of the rest of the magazine which are colours that appeal
to the target audience. It has developed normal conventions are my masthead has a gradient of
pink and purple which typical magazines dont have as they usually use block colours. Above this
the skyline has a block colour of pink behind the text to make it stand out to the reader. This
follows the convention of a typical magazine as other magazines such as Top of the pops also use
this technique to bring the readers attention to certain information and offers the magazine
includes. The main image takes up the middle section of the page with cover lines surrounding it
and the image of the person featuring on the double page spread. This is a typical magazine
convention as magazines often use the main image of the person the main double page spread
focuses on. Separate images are used of other people featuring in the magazine but are not as
important. Other magazine also do this to let the reader know they are featuring at some part in
the magazine but the main image is the main story/interview etc. The main cover line is the second
biggest test after the masthead as it also needs to capture the eye of readers. It is often in the
middle section of the page under the person in the main images face. I have used a puff to make it
clear to the reader what page the main article is on and other magazines also do this to draw the
attention to other articles in the magazine. I have also used a strapline offering a chance to win gig
tickets to a well-known artist the target audience would want to go and see. This is following
conventions as other magazines use straplines to promote what the magazine has to offer. The
barcode is in the bottom left corner out the way as it is not important to the reader.

On

my contents page I have used the same title as my masthead so its

consistent with my front page. Other magazines such as we <3 pop often to
this too but well known ones such as Top of the pops dont as their logo is well
known. As this is the first issue of my magazine it is important for me to use it
on both. I have followed the convention that the colour scheme is continued into
the contents page so it is also consistent with the front page. This is following
convention as other magazines such as Top of the pops often does this too. I
have used an editors introduction to make it more personal to the reader and
introduce the new magazine as a whole. I have used language that would appeal
to the target audience and explains what the magazine has to offer. I have
broken conventions by not using rule of thirds but my contents page is split into
2 columns as this make it easier for the reader to find what they are looking for.
I have used 2 images on my contents with the main article in my magazine being
highlighted by an image and puff of what page to turn to. The other image
features another important article in the magazine on the boy band MTW which
the target audience would be interested in reading. The background is white and
the main text is black so it stands out and is clear to read.

my double page spread the image takes up the whole page with
the artist on the right hand page and text on the left. Other
magazines such as Mojo also do this. The image is taken in a lift to
show Kiera on the way to the interview. I have followed the
convention that the title, quotes and caption of the double page is in
a different font to the rest of the text to make it stand out to the
reader as important. The title and caption is in white text with a
black stroke so it stands out from the background. The quotes are in
black text so it also stands out. A have used a white transparent box
around the main interview text which is black and pink. I have used
pink so it follows the colour scheme of the rest of the magazine but
black text so it is clear to read over the white transparent box behind
it. The masthead features in the bottom left hand corner next to the
page number so it is clear to the reader what magazine they are
reading and makes it consistent throughout the magazine.
