Betrayal of marriage
the protagonist's husband, Patrick Maloney
abruptly tells his pregnant wife that he is leaving
this unexplained marriage decision, which is
underlying the importance of marriage vows.

there is still got more betrayals after that which is caused by her.
Example:At that point, Mary Maloney simply walked up behind
him and without any pause she swung the big frozen leg of lamb
high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the
back of his head.(page 3,paragraph 5,line1)
She richly thought of accomplice and convincing lies and
fabrications to the detectives also constitute the theme of betrayal.
Mary was out of mind and posses until she willing
to kill her beloved husband.

Loyalty To Husband
always following her husband's order and commands
Example :
She took his coat and hung it closer.Then she walked over and make
the drinks,a strongish one for him.

She loved to luxuriate in the presence of this man, and to feel-almost
as a sunbather feels the sun-that warm male glow that came out of
him to her when they were alone together. (page 1 paragraph 7,line

Mary loves her husband so much, where every single

moment she thinking the well being of her husband.


She also loves her unborn baby so much.

2. She loved to luxuriate in the presence of this man, and to
feel-almost as a sunbather feels the sun-that warm male glow
that came out of him to her when they were alone together.
She loved him for the way he sat loosely in a chair, for the
way he came in a door, or moved slowly across the room with
long strides. She loved intent, far look in his eyes when they
rested in her, the funny shape of the mouth, and especially the
way he remained silent about his tiredness, sitting still with
himself until the whiskey had taken some of it away. (page 1,

As a responsible wife, Mary always fulfils all

the need of her husband and never fail from her


responsibility.

Mary respect her husband even he is

neglecting her presence, the respect


shown even her husband being rude by
she tolerate the situation.
Mary also respect all police officers
which came to her house for the
investigation.

Example:
1. Darling, she said. Would you like me to get you some cheese?? I havent made any
supper because its Thursday.
No, he said.
If youre too tired to eat out, she went on; its still not too late. Theres plenty of meat
and stuff in the freezer, and you can have it right here and not even move out of the
chair.
Her eyes waited on him for an answer, a smile, a little nod, but he made no sign.
Anyway, she went on, I'll get you some cheese and crackers first.
I dont want it, he said.
She moved uneasily in her chair, the large eyes still watching his face. But you must
eat! Ill fix it anyway, and then you can have it or not, as you like.
She stood up and placed her sewing on the table by the lamp.
Sit down, he said. Just for a minute, sit down.
It wasnt till then that she began to get frightened.
Go on, he said. Sit down.
She lowered herself back slowly into the chair, watching him all the time with those
large, bewildered eyes. He had finished the second drink and was staring down into
the glass, frowning. (page 2, paragraph 1-12)

2. Well, she said. Here you all are, and good friends of dear

Patricks too, and helping to catch the man who killed him.
You must be terrible hungry by now because its long past
your suppertime, and I know Patrick would never forgive
me, God bless his soul, if I allowed you to remain in his
house without offering you decent hospitality.
Why dont you eat up that lamb thats in the oven? Itll be
cooked just right by now. (page 6, paragraph 14, line1-4)

4. Understanding
Mary, an understanding wife, she understand

every movement of her husband and re-act


accordingly, she never tries to over take the
behavior of her husband and never get angry.
Example:
1. knew he didnt want to speak much until the
first drink was finished, and she, on her side,
was content to sit quietly, enjoying his
company after the long hours alone in the
house. (page 1, paragraph 7, line1-2)

5. Friendly
Mary is a very friendly person because even though Sam is a

shopkeeper shes talked friendly to him.

1. Hello Sam, she said brightly, aloud. . (page 3, paragraph 12,
line1)
2. Hello Sam, she said brightly, smiling at the man behind the
counter. (page 3, paragraph 17, line1)
3. Well-what would you suggest, Sam? (page 4, paragraph 3,

The police officers that came to Marys house were so


kind until they understand her situation.

Example :
1. Sure Ill give you a drink. You mean this whiskey?

We can try, Mrs. Maloney. (page 6, paragraph 14,
line1-2)

7. Patient

Mary was very patient until she wait for her husband
who came late home.

1. Mary Maloney was waiting for her husband to

come him from work. (page 1, paragraph 2, line11)

paragraph 4, line1-1)

8. Caring
Mary

is a very caring person. She taking care of her


husband very well, taking care his food and his hospitality

Example :
1. Tired darling?? (page 1, paragraph 8, line1)
2. If youre too tired to eat out, she went on; its still not too late.

Theres plenty of meat and stuff in the freezer, and you can have it
