STRENGTH OF CURVED STRUCTURES

Guide
Babu R Mohan

OBJECTIVES (Cont.)
1. To Study about the role of Bending stress and Residual stress
on various cross-sections of curved structures.
2. To select the best cross-sections of a curved structure according
to the applications.

OBJECTIVES (Cont.)
3. To find the cross-section with minimum
Residual stress for certain applications.(eg:Residual stress in crane hooks are unfavorable.)
4. Decreasing the residual stress in crane hooks
increases its load carrying ability.

OBJECTIVES (Cont.)
4. To find cross-sections that have high residual stress for
applications of curved structures like Arch Dam, Arched Bridges.
5. Here Residual stress is utilized to increase the strength of the
construction.

ABOUT THE PROJECT (Cont.)

Curved beams are manufactured by bending of straight
beams.
The machining process causes residual stress to develop in
these structures.
The magnitude of residual stresses affects the life and
strength of curved beams.
Therefore a study on effect of residual stress on curved
beams is inevitable.

ABOUT THE PROJECT (Cont.)

Before that a study of bending stress on various crosssections of curved structures needs to be carried out.
For this purpose a C-program is to be developed.
Residual stress in a cross-section is opposite in magnitude
to the force caused by initial bending.

ABOUT THE PROJECT (Cont.)

Residual stress in cross section in a particular cross-section
can be favorable or unfavorable depending on the mode of
future loading.

For calculating residual stress, shape factor for each crosssection is evaluated first.
Residual stress is calculated using empirical relation
connecting residual stress & shape factor.

CONTRIBUTIONS
Elliptical , Hollow circular & I-Section are selected
randomly as curved beam cross sections for study.

C-program is developed for calculating bending

stress of various cross sections.

The result so obtained is plotted in a graph using

excel.
