1. FOREWORD

The proposed walkway runs between the Sanjauli Chowk to Indra Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) located in
Shimla the capital city of Himachal Pradesh. The proposed walkway shall be 3 metre in width and have sloping
covering at top.
This report forms the basis of the structural design process and the assumptions which are considered for the
structural design of the proposed structure.
The report aims at formulating the main design parameters that the structural consultant will adopt to develop
the structural analysis and design of the structure that will be compatible with the architectural theme, satisfy the
functional needs, adhere to the norms and the Indian Standards provisions, and will be safe, stable, strong, yet
optimally economical.
Since the parameters considered in this report are going to be the basis of the structural design calculations, the
design and planning team members – owners, architects, services consultants and project management team –
are expected to provide their feedback and approval to the assumption, queries, recommendations, and
suggestions mentioned in the report.

2. STRUCTURAL SYSTEM
The structure will consist mainly two type of supporting system, one a 150 thick slab projecting from central
beam which will be supported on the RCC column of varying height between 3 to 6 metre, and second type of
system shall be, cantilever beam will be provided which will be supported on the column on the road side and
over the existing RR retaining wall. Expansion joint will also be provided at suitable distance.
The top covering shall be supported over Square Hollow Sections (SHS) spaced at approximate 6 metre centre
to centre. The purlin shall be of Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS) spaced at approximate 0.6 metre only to
support 0.63 mm profile sheet which will experience heavy snow load.
The structure will be analysed using STAAD-PRO software for all possible load combinations and situations.

3. FOUNDATION SYSTEM

Geo-technical report will be referred and the recommendations and conclusions from the report will be taken in
the analysis. For the preliminary analysis foundation level will be taken at 2.0m below existing natural ground
level with a SBC of 12 ton/sq.m.

6. LOADING PARAMETERS

The various loads to be carried by the structure are as follows:

Dead Loads

 The self-weight of the structure.

 Floor Finish 150 mm thick.
 0.63 mm profile sheet, 10 kg/sqm (including coatings)

Imposed Loads

The superimposed loads at truss level shall be 0.75 kN/sqm (75 kg/sqm) and at walkway level it will be
5kN/sq.m (500 kg/sqm).
Seismic Loads

Seismic loads will be calculated in accordance with BIS 1893 – 2016.

 Design Horizontal Seismic Coefficient (αh) = (Z×I×Sa) / (2R×g)

 Z (Zone factor) = 0.24 (Zone IV)

 I (Importance factor) = 1.2

 R (Response reduction factor with OMRF) = 3.0

Wind Loads

Wind loads will be calculated in accordance with BIS 875: Part 3 corresponding to basic Wind velocity of
Shimla that is 39 m/s.

Design wind speed, Vz = Vb × K1 × K2 × K3

 Vb = Vb m/s (As per Site)

 K1 (risk coefficient) = 1.0 (for 50 years mean probable design life)

 K2 = For Terrain Category 2, class C. Value varies with height.

Refer to Table 2 of BIS 875: Part 3

 K3 (Topography factor) = 1.0

Based on the above,

 Design Wind speed (Vz) = 39 m/s

 Design Wind Pressure (Pz) = 0.6 × Vz2

Snow Loads

The total ground snow load shall be determined by assuming 1.2 m deep snow. The density of snow shall be
considered as 5kN/m3 (500 kg/m3).
In covered path 0.6 m deep snow load shall be applied, and at truss level load reduction factor due to slope shall
be considered as 0.8 (refer IS-875-4).

7. LOAD COMBINATIONS

The results obtained from the computer analysis in the form of member forces and reactions will be used in
designing the structural members. The following serviceability and collapse load combinations shall be used.
Please note that ASCE-7 code shall be followed for Snow Load (SL) combinations.
