LACED AND

BATTENED
COLUMNS
PREPARED BY
SHAMILAH ANUDAI@ANUAR
INTRODUCTION
• Built-up columns are used when the column buckling
length are large and the compression forces are
relatively low.
• 2 types of built-up columns are :-
• A) Built-up columns with lacing (Laced built-up
column)
• B) Built-up columns with battens (Battened built-up
column)
LACED & BATTENED COLUMNS
• Advantages
• - Reduction of mass
• - Increasing of flexural stiffness
• - Architectural effect
• Disadvantages :-
• - Costs of joints
• - Costs of protection against corrosion

Types of section
• Chord :
• i) I-shape
• ii) Channels
• Web members (laced system)
• - Angels
• Web members (battened systems)
• - Plates
BATTENED COLUMN
The application of laced and
battened columns
Design of laced built-up column
• Step 1 : Maximum compression axial force in the
chords -Effective second moment of area
Shear stiffness Sv of built-up column Initial bow imperfection
• Maximum axial compression force in the
chords
- For a member with two identical chords, the
force Nch,Ed can be calculated using :
• Step 2 : In-plane buckling resistance of the
chord
• - Buckling resistance of a chord about z-z axis
The resistance of the chord has to be
verified for flexural buckling in the plane of
the built-up member i.e. about the weak axis
of the cross-section of the chord (z-z axis).
• Step 3: Out-of-plane buckling resistance of the
chords

• Step 4 : Maximum shear force

- For a built-up member subject to a compressive
axial force only :
Design of battened built-up
• column axial force in the

chords -Effective second moment of area

• Out-of plane buckling resistance of the chords

Example 1
• The geometry of built-up columns is described
in Figure A1 and geometry properties of built-
up columns shown in Figure A2. For the ULS
combination of actions, an axial force and a
bending moment about strong axis of the
compound section are applied at the top of
the column.
Exercise
• Design a suitable UC of S355 steel of Figure 2 to
resist loading of a simply supported about both
principal axes at each end (Lcr,y = 12m) and has a
central brace which prevents lateral deflections in
the minor principal plane (Lcr,z = 6m). Check the
adequacy of the selected section for a factored axial
compressive load corresponding to a nominal dead
load of 160kN and a nominal imposed load of 230kN.
