DIAPHRAGM

The diaphragm is a shallow, dome shape,


latex device.
Firm and flexible rim which keeps the
diaphragm in place and covers the cervix.
The spring for the rim may come in
different ranges of diameters.
Available in various of sizes.

Require a trained health provider to supply


the appropriate size.
Used with spermicidal cream, jelly or foam
to enhance the effectiveness.
Blocking sperm from entering the cervix
Should be inserted before intercourse

INDICATION
Safe for all women
CONTRAINDICATION
Just delivered a baby or had an abortion less
than 6/52
Allergy to latex
RVD or high risk infected by their partner
uterine prolapse or large cystocoele

HOW TO USE?
1. Preparation before using diaphragm:
- get the diaphragm from a reliable health provider
- ensure the condition of the diaphragm is suitable for
use
- ensure proper fitting
2. Wash hands before inserting to prevent infections
3. Insert diaphragm 6 hours before sexual intercourse
4. Check diaphragm for expiry date of spermicides and
ensure diaphragm is intact
5. Squeeze a spoonful of spermcdal cream, jelly or foam
into the daiphragm and around the rim

6. Hold the rim together, inserting it into the vagina as far


as it goes, while in a comfortable position
eg: squatting, raising one leg, sitting or lying down
7. Feel for the diaphragm to ensure it has covered the
cervix.
8. Retain the diaphragm in vagina for 6 hours, but not more
than 24 hours to prevent the risk of toxic effects.
9. remove the diaphragm by sliding a finger under the rim
of the diaphragm, pulling it down and out carefully.

CARE OF DIAPHRAGM
1. Avoid using oil based product such as body lubricant,
mineral oil, baby oil or vaginal lubricant. These products
can weaken the rubber.
2. Washed in warm and mild soap after used. Do not used
detergent soaps and soap containing oil products.
3. Dried thoroughly with towel after washing.
4. Dusted with cornstarch. Do not use talc or body powder.
5. To clean the introducer (if used) wash with mild soap and
warm water, rinse and dry thoroughly.
6. Place the diaphragm in the plastic case for storage. do
not stored near heat source or exposed to light for
extended period.
