as the United States (U.S.) or
America, is a federal republic
composed of 50states, the
federal district of Washington
, D.C.

The
48 contiguous states and W
ashington, D.C.
are in central
North America between
Canada and Mexico

At 3.8 million square miles (9.9 million km2)

and with over 320 million people, the


country is the world's
third largest by total area (fourth largest by
land area) and the third most populous. It is
one of the world's most ethnically diverse
andmulticultural nations, the product of
large-scale immigration from many countries

The geography and

climate are also


extremely diverse, and
the country is home to a
wide variety of wildlife.

Government and politics

The federal

government is
composed of three
branches:

Legislative: The bicameral Congress,

made up of the Senate and the


House of Representatives, makes
federal law,declares war, approves
treaties, has the power of the purse,
and has the power of impeachment, by
which it can remove sitting members of
the government

Executive: The President is the

commander-in-chief of the military, can


veto legislative bills before they become
law (subject to Congressional override),
and appoints the
members of the Cabinet (subject to
Senate approval) and other officers,
who administer and enforce federal laws
and policies.

Judicial: The Supreme Court and

lower federal courts, whose


judges are appointed by the
President with Senate approval,
interpret laws and overturn
those they find unconstitutional
