Factors for Down


Syndrome in Sibu

Introduction
Risk factor of having children with Down
syndrome = mother's age.
However, the well-established risk factor,
advanced maternal age, was not found in
many of the Down syndrome cases in
Egypt.

Research done in Egypt showed other


than advaced maternal age, educational
status of parents are risk factors for Down
syndrome.
Another research done in United States
showed ethnic differences a risk factos of
having children with Down syndrome.

Introduction
Other socio-demographic risk factors less
well studied no one knows for sure how
many different other factors play a role
Little has been researched on Down
Syndrome in Sarawak

Objectives
1. To determine sociodemographic risk
factors of having having children with
Down Syndrome
2. To determine if sociodemographic play a
role among children with Down sydrome
with or without comorbidities.

Methods
Case Control Study
Case:
Those registered in child development center
in Sibu
Less than 18 years old
From Sibu

Control group:
- All term baby in Hospital Sibu from
February 2015 to April 2015

Parents educational background
Parents occupation
Co-morbidities in children with Down
syndrome

sociodemographic risk factors among

Discussion
Advanced maternal age and family income
are significant risk factors of having children
with Down Syndrome.

Limitations
Relatively few samples
Comparing a study group with sociodemographic data up until 18 years earlier
against a control group in recent time

Conclusion
Advanced maternal age and high family
income are significant risk factors for having
children with Down Syndrome in Sibu
population.
No identifiable socio-demographic risk
factors between Down sydrome with or
without comorbidities.
