Goal Setting

and mental
preparation

Learning Objective:

TBAT apply SMART Goals to exam style questions (C)

TBAT apply understanding to planning 6 mark questions (B)

TBAT plan and write a solid 6 mark question (A)

Specific

Means knowing exactly what the goal is.

e.g. I want to run 100m further in the
Coopers run test. (Not I want to become
fitter) Must be specific to the sport you
play.

Measurable

Means it is easy to know when a goal has

been achieved (the above is clearly
measurable) Think how it could be
measured?

Achievable

The above target in a 6 week training

programme is achievable, running a
marathon after 4 weeks training isn't. Is the
goal too hard?

Realistic

If the goal is to be achieved in practice (not

just theory) it is necessary to have the time
and resources to complete it. E.g. consider
gym opening times, facilities, equipment
needed.

Time-bound

Does the goal have an end point? If not it is

too easy to put off achieving it indefinitely!

6 mark question
Discuss how SMART targets can be used to aid an
athlete to achieve their goals.
