Weld symbol: A symbol that
indicates the type of weld.
Welding symbol: A method of
representing the weld on drawings.

Elements of welding

Indicating sides of a joint


Arrow side: The side
of the joint
indicated by the
welding symbol
arrow. Sometimes
called the near
side.
Other side: The side
of the joint opposite
the arrow side.

Indicating location of
weld
A weld symbol below the reference line
indicates a weld on the arrow side

Indicating location of
weld
A weld symbol above the reference
line indicates a weld on the other side

Indicating location of
weld
Weld symbols on both sides of the
reference line indicate welds on
both sides of the joint
