What is Plagiarism?
The Oxford

English
Dictionary says
it means '..to
take and use as
one's own the
thoughts,
writings, or
inventions of
another.' (OED
1987).

Why Avoid Plagiarism?


Schools and Universities do not allow

plagiarism. If you do it, you are


risking the successful completion of
your studies.
You have to treat the issue of
plagiarism seriously and avoid it.
Contrary to what you may feel, your
teachers want you to succeed. So if you
are ever in doubt about your writing
always ask them.

Technique 1:
Paraphrasing
(re-writing
in your own
words)

Dont cut
text into

and paste
your report!

It is better to

read the facts and


put them in your
own words.
You will understand
what your read and
be able to explain
it in your report.

Technique 2:

Follow the rules when


copying directly
from a text

Reference Lists /
Bibliographies
Whether you are using footnotes, endnotes

or brief references in the text you must


supply full information about the sources
of information you are referring to. The
information supplied about each publication
must contain the following elements:
the name of the author(s)
the date of publication
the title of the work
the publisher
Other information may also be necessary.
