On the Priority Plan & Reconciliation

In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
By now we have all received Bishops Gruss 155-page book, Through Him, With Him, and in Him, and
maybe even have read some of its pages, This book is the end product of his plans for the Diocese of
Rapid City over the next five years. Included with the book is an 8-page summary of the book titled,
Priority Plan of the Diocese of Rapid City. Hopefully, we have at least read this.
If we have read this pamphlet, then we know there are 8 agenda items, having two goals each, for
implementation. Again, the 8 items are: 1. Reconciliation, 2. Forming Disciples, 3. Funding the
Mission, 4. Sacraments & Worship, 5. Education & Formation, 6. Governance & Finance, 7. Social
Services & Outreach, 8. Vocations & Evangelization.

IMMACULATECONCEPTIONCHURCHOFRAPIDCITY
An apostolate of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter preaching the Gospel &
sanctifying souls according to the liturgical books of 1962.

Some of the plans goals pertain to parishes, some to the Diocese as a whole. Some parish goals
ICC is already working on e.g., we finally have a DRE, Mr. Matt Bruch, who is overseeing a more
intensive catechism of our youth than had existed; we also now have a Vocations Committee Chair,
Mr. JD Henderson, who will oversee this task suitable to ICCs particular liturgical life.

Currently, the Diocese is advocating the topic of Reconciliation. So we will speak to that here.

Fr. Chris Hathaway, FSSP, Pastor

Fr. John Hardon S.J., (Modern Catholic Dictionary) defines Reconciliation: The act or state of reestablishing friendship between God and a human being, or between two persons. Reconciliation with
God is necessary after a person has lost the divine friendship through grievous sin. It requires
repentance on the part of the sinner and forgiveness on the part of God. The willingness to be
reconciled with another person is a necessary condition for obtaining Gods mercy.

As we well know, God has reconciled the world to himself by the death of His Son, God, who has
reconciled us to himself by Christ. (1 Cor. 5:18). We also know God wills men to be reconciled with
each other, leave your gift at the altar and go first and be reconciled with your brother (Mt 5:24);
Ecce quam bonum et quam iucundum, habitare fratres in unum! (Ps132:1)
The bishop writes, In our own diocese there is continual need for reconciliation in families, in faith
communities, among races or ethnic groups. The breakdown of the family is often caused by the lack
of reconciliation among members. Racism is still experienced in our local communities. People have
the experience of not feeling welcomed or accepted, therefore leaving a community which should be
the most welcoming, the Church. Others have left the Church through their own neglect of their faith
life. All faith communities must find ways to encourage their return and welcome them back. These
are a few examples of areas where there is need for reconciliation.
Whatever the situation among the individuals or groups of people who feel disconnected from the
Church, they are part of the Diocese of Rapid City whether they realize it or not. If we are true to our
mission statement in living the mission of Jesus Christ, leading to eternal life then we must find ways
to reach out to them because we care for their souls.
The two goals for this agenda item are: 1. Identify areas where reconciliation & unity are strong and
areas where reconciliation is needed by December 1, 2016; 2. Submit to the Bishop a plan which
engages and promotes reconciliation and includes an implementation process by March 1, 2017.
Likely, we all acknowledge that reconciliation is a constant need in our fallen world. Again, since
Adam & Eve, there will always be the danger losing Gods friendship as much as being at odds with
our fellow man. For reconciling remedies we need Confession, good will, & constant motives.
Todays Gospel presents such a motive. A king completely forgives an unpayable debt of one of his
servants who, in turn, demands of a fellow servant the full payment of a tiny sum owed him; as this
fellow servant cannot pay, the ungrateful servant throws him in prison. The king discovers this, and
retracting his forgiveness, sends the ungrateful servant not just to prison but to the torturers until he
pays back all. Again, as God has completely dismissed mans unpayable debt owed Him so men
should readily forgive the lesser trespasses of a neighbor. St. Augustine says the ungrateful servant
is in hellforever paying off the unpayable fullness of his debt. Is that not a good motive to be
reconciled to a brother?

Note the precision of the Scriptures. The servant owing
many talents falls down and adores the King. But he who
owed a hundred pence, did not worship, but falling down
besought his fellow servant, saying, Have patience with me.
But not even the very words that saved himself moved the
ungrateful servant. And so we read, And he would not. ~
Origen; Church Father; 253 +.
Today, after Mass, everyone is welcome downstairs to socialize; Youth
Catechism Classes meet; Ushers, please take up a 2nd collection for World
Mission Sunday (Bishop Gruss letter at back of church); Father hears
confessions at Terra Sancta from 12 noon to 2:30 pm for a Diocesan Youth
Rally; two Henderson children receive their First Holy Communion, they will
receive immediatley after the servers and parents may attend them and
receive Communion then as well.
This week, Wednesday, no Catechism Class.
ICCs DRE, Matt Bruch, invites you to donate fine religious artwork for the
three classrooms in Le Brick Beauty. You may approach Mr. Bruch directly
about this or put said items downstairs marked For Matt Bruch or you may
drop them off at the rectory, (leave on porch if Father is not there; again,
marked For Matt Bruch.)
Today we will speak on the Priority Plan for the Diocese of Rapid City
with emphasis on the topic of Reconciliation. Father has placed 15
copies of a handout offered by the diocese to assist the parish in
implementing this particular agenda item of the Plan. It is titled, Action Plan
for Pastoral Priority Reconciliation. you are welcome to take a copy
home and read it. After reading it, please return it to the Free Rake
downstairs where others may find it should they wish to read it as well. This
way, it is hoped, the info may circulate through the community or at least
make it available to others. After today, any left over copies will be removed
from the vestibule and put in the Free Rake.
