AutoCAD is a CAD (Computer Aided Design
or Computer Aided Drafting) software
application for 2D and 3D design and
drafting.
It was developed and sold by Autodesk, Inc.
From its beginnings in 1982, it has been
translated into 18 languages and is used by
millions of people world-wide.

Today its makers autodesk, are the 2nd
largest software company in the world.
AutoCAD is found in 85% of the businesses
and schools that design, document and
manufacture.
Its drawing formats (dwg and dxf) are now
the industry standards for the exchange of
electronic drawings, between professionals
and regulatory bodies.

AutoCAD is a general design & documentation tool
it is used across a large number of industries
including, architecture, interior design, construction,
engineering, landscape design, product design and
manufacture, naval and aeronautical design, piping
and cabling, just to name a few.
Anyone that needs to produce, accurate plans and
sections of a design, can utilize AutoCAD for this
task.

An AutoCAD drawing is made up of objects. These
can be either simple graphic objects (such as lines,
arcs, circles, text, etc.) or blocks (which are groups of
objects).
Each object also has certain attributes associated with
it, such as line style, text font, or colour.

Features
The standard windows dropdown menus.
The standard windows toolbar below the
menus, it includes: File New, File Open,
File Save, Print and Spell Check(!!).
In addition to the standard toolbar there are
three AutoCAD specific toolbars: Object
Properties, Draw and Modify.

Features
The graphics area - that's the area where you draw
- note the scroll bars and the axis label.
The command area - this small window (by
default) has space for three lines of text - this is
where you type commands.
The status area, at the bottom of the AutoCAD
window, this includes the current cursor position,
and the time!

Command Entry
Typically there are three ways of giving a
command!
Type the command using the keyboard - the
command is displayed in the command
area.
Select the command from a menu.
Select the command's icon from a toolbar.
