DEFINITION OF VARIETY
Variety means the diversity in the elements of an image
Variety is usually the contrast and or emphasis of colours, size of
objects, shapes, and the overall composition in an image
These usually obvious or even subtle changes in the elements of
an image can create interest for the viewer and bring an artwork to
life
FUNCTION OF VARIETY
Variety is used to unify the effect of emphasis/dominance and
spread attention throughout the whole image to inspire interest and
keep the image from being boring.
To show that different elements can work together in an image,
regardless of colour, shape and size
VARIETY OF COLOUR
Variety of colours are usually the use of constrasting colours or
tones.
It can be used to express or represent emotions or a vibes. Such as
anger, happiness and many more.
EXAMPLE OF
VARIETY IN
MAN MADE
OBJECTS
Marilyn Diptych1962
By Andy Warhol
o All of the faces are of the same
person and design, (Marilyn Monroe)
making the image harmonious
o The differences in colours of the
image makes the image more eyecatching
VARIETY IN SIZES
Different sizes of objects are also helpful in creating interest into an
image.
Variation in sizes can be used to show an illusion of 3-D depth in an
image
EXAMPLES OF VARIATION IN
SIZE
VARIETY IN SHAPES
Variety in shape is essential because, well it keeps the art
interesting. If an artist paints the same shape 10 times, it will get
boring.
If an artist paints 10 different shapes in their art, people will keep
on looking, because it will be generally more interesting.
EXAMPLES OF VARIATION IN
SHAPE
The variation in shapes and shades give this image a 3-D feeling,
like natural formations in gems or rocks
VARIATION IN DEPTH
Linear perspective in the real world makes things look smaller in
the distance some artist try to avoid depth by making large things
duller and smaller things brighter to make the objects contradict
realism.
