Experiment 7: Synthesis and Conductance of

Some Ionic Substances

Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory

CHEM 238L
Fall 2016

Structures:

Structures:
Ligands: Electron donors around the
central transition metal atom.

Coordinate Covalent Bond: A

covalent bond where both electrons
of the bond are provided by one of
the atoms.

With our complexes the ligands

provide the electrons for the
coordinate covalent bonds.

Procedure
Carbonatotetraamminecobalt(III) Nitrate, [Co(NH 3)4CO3]NO3
Safety Note: Handle 30% H2O2 with rubber gloves; it can cause severe skin burns.
In case of a spill, wash the affected area immediately with water. No precautions are
necessary to protect the reaction mixtures from the atmosphere. Operations that
necessitate heating of the solutions should be carried out in an efficient hood.
Dissolve 10 g (0.105 mol) of ammonium carbonate (NH 4)2CO3in 30 mL of distilled
water and add 30 mL of concentrated ammonium hydroxide, NH 4OH. While
stirring, pour this solution into a solution containing 7.5 g (0.026 mol) of
[Co(OH2)6](NO3)2 in 30 mL of H20. Then slowly add 4 mL of a 30% H2O2 solution.
Pour the solution into a 150-mL beaker and concentrate the solution to 45 - 50 mL
over a hot plate. Do not allow the solution to boil. While the solution is
concentrating, add, in small portions, 2.5 g (0.025 mol) of (NH 4)2CO3. Filter the
hot solution with a suction filtration apparatus and cool the filtrate in an ice bath.
Under suction, filter off the red product crystals. Wash the [Co(NH 3)4CO3]NO3 in
the filtration apparatus first with a few milliliters of water (the compound is
somewhat soluble) and then with a similar amount of ethanol. Obtain a yield. Save
a portion of your product for the conductance determination.

Finnish Bouncy Putty Stuff.

Procedure
Part III. Testing the Product:
Perform the following tests on samples of your putty being sure to
Wear gloves at all times during testing.
Roll it into a ball and test its bouncing properties.
Test its stretching properties by first pulling it slowly and then by
pulling it sharply.
Place a sample on a hard surface and apply a constant pressure with
your thumb.
Load into high pressure pneumatic cannon and shoot at lab partner.
