Experiment 7B: Synthesis and Conductance of

Some Ionic Substances (Cont.)

Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory

CHEM 238L
Fall 2016

Structures:

Molecular Mass of Nitrate: 249 g/mol

[Co(NH3)4CO3]NO3

Structures:

Molecular Mass of Chloride: 250.3 g/mol

[Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2

Synthesis Procedure
Chloropentaamminecobalt(III) Chloride, [Co(NH 3)5Cl]Cl2:
Dissolve 5.0 g (0.02 mmol) of [Co(NH3)4CO3]NO3 in 50 mL of H2O and add 5 - 10
mL of concentrated HCl until all of the CO2 is expelled. Neutralize the reaction
solution with concentrated aqueous NH 3 and then add about 5 mL excess (spot
some of the solution on pH paper to check the pH). Heat for 20 mm, again avoiding
boiling; [Co(NH3)5(OH2)]3 is formed. Cool the solution slightly and add 75 mL of
concentrated HCl. Reheat for 20 - 30 min and observe the change in color. Cool the
solution to room temperature, and decant the solution from the purple-red crystals
of the product. Wash the compound several times, by decantation, with small
amounts of ice-cold distilled water, then filter. Wash with several milliliters of
ethanol.

Conductance Measurements:
You will measure the conductivities of 0.001M aqueous solutions of
your coordination compounds, NaCl (58.5 g/mol), MgCl2 (94.3 g/mol),
and Na2SO4 (142 g/mol) using a Vernier system conductance probe.
Specific instructions will be provided by the instructor(s).
