LESSON 34:

SEED
GERMINATIO
N & GROWTH
GERMINATION IS THE PROCESS BY WHICH A
PLANT GROWS FROM A SEED . THE MOST
COMMON EXAMPLE OF GERMINATION IS THE
SPROUTING OF A SEEDLING FROM A SEED OF AN
ANGIOSPERM OR GYMNOSPERM.

Germination of seeds
In

this activity, a controlled experiment is

used to investigate the conditions for
seed germination. In a controlled
experiment, at least two set-ups are
used for every investigation. All the
variables or conditions are kept equal in
all the set-ups except for one that is
being investigated. The variables that
are the same in all the set-ups are called
constant. The variable that is being
investigated, which is also the variable
that is being changed, is called
manipulative variable. The variable that
is being observed as a result of the

Ways seeds are

dispersed

There are certain types of seeds that

come in a pod. When the pod dries up, it
blasts and forcefully sends the seeds
inside the pods away from the parent
plant.

Some seeds are dispersed when they are

eaten by animals. Animals eat the fruits
containing the seeds.

Some seeds have a hooklike extension on

their seed coat. These hooklike structures
attach themselves to animals that pass
by.
