2nd & 4th-Todays Plan: 12/15/16

Bellwork: Test Q&A and Turn in Book! (15

mins)
If you finish early, work on chart
When everyone finishes, well do fungus
notes and go over parts of the plant lab that
you may have to do on your own.

Todays Plan: 5/7/14

Bellwork: Read the carnivorous plants article
and answer the following:
Why do plants become carnivorous?
Why are so many carnivorous plants endangered?
How has NC tried to save endangered
carnivorous plants?

Plant lab (40 mins)

Fungus and plant Notes (the rest of class )

Todays Plan: 5/9/16

Bellwork: Go over microorganisms partner
quiz and do Q&A time (15 mins)
Unit 8 test (as needed)
If you finish early, finish and turn in the
book-DUE TODAY!
If you still need something to do, work on
missing work or begin the plant/animal chart.

Microscope Self-quiz
Name 1 rule for using or handling the
microscope
What is the orientation of things under the
microscope (in what position are things in?)
If you move something under the
microscope down and to the left, in which
direction does it appear to move?
How do you calculate total magnification of
the microscope?

Protists and Fungi

Kingdom Protista has 3 types: Plant-like,

Animal-like, and fungus-like (many Phyla in
each)
Animal-like are called Protozoans. They
move using pseudopods,flagella, or Cillia.
Ex: Amoeba, Diatoms (plankton),
Paramecium-see camera
Plant-like are called Algae. They can move
as above. Ex: Volvox, Euglena (most of the
time).
Fungus-like: slime molds-see book pictures.

Disease-Causing Protists
Sporozoans-Amebic dyssentry, Malaria,
Trypanosomes, Trichonella
All effect different parts of the body and
some infect other organisms.
What kind of relationship is this (between
protist and host organism)?

Fungi
Basic Structure consists of some sort of
spore-delivery system (sporangium) and
Mycelium (a network of threadlike
Hyphae)
Hyphae give structure and support, as well
as feed the organism.
Hyphae penetrate a food source, secrete
digestive enzymes inside of the food, and
when the food is liquified, they absorb it
(extracellular digestion)

Reproduction
Most fungi reproduce sexually when their
hyphae touch.
Yeasts Reproduce asexually by budding.
Many fungi can regenerate if cutfragmentation.
Why do mushrooms come back to the same
spot, even if you remove them?

Fungus fun-facts
Mushrooms often grow in a ring, called a fairy circle. It
was believed that a person who fell asleep in one would
be carried off by fairies. Many drunken bets were made
over who would be willing to fall asleep in one.
In Michigan, a large section of hyphae were found of a
particular mushroom. Another section was found
elsewhere (several miles away). Genetic testing
revealed that the hyphae were from the same mushroom.
It covers a 38 acre area and weighs 100 tons. It is
estimated to be 1500 years old. Other, larger
mushrooms have been found, making them the largest
naturally occurring organism on the planet.
