4. critical teaching, and
5. the development of democratic schools.

4. Educational Policy Studies at the University of Wisconsin in
Madison, Wisconsin.
5. Doctor Apple is a noted figure in Contemporary Education and
has significantly changed educational review and study over
the past 35 years.
6. Some of his other publications include Theology and the
Curriculum,
His Theory

1. Can Education Change Society and

2. Does a National Curriculum Make Sense
3. Apple asserts that schools not only control
people, but
4. They control meaning. Although his research is
three decades old,
5. It still impacts our educational system today.
Purpose of Study
1. Identify the most Area of improvement.
2. Help Ministry of labor to identify the gap
between the current skills employee
have and the desire skills required by
private sector.
3. Develop a needs analysis method to
identify Education and training required.
4. Power and culture are to be considered
interconnected parts of the educational
system.
5. He asserts that schools are caught up
with three other institutions; political,
economic and cultural.
Purpose of Study

6. Apple wants educators to look for the

connections in education and power that are
embedded in the daily running of a classroom.
7. The question to be asked here is what is the
role of the school in producing inequalities?
8. Working class students were seen as empty
boxes and were placed in schools with less
resources.
9. The hidden curriculum can be referred to as
the unwritten, unofficial and often
unconnected lessons students learn in
schools.
Purpose of Study

10.Educators and administrators have been

concerned about this for years and have
developed Core Curriculum standards.
11.National Curriculum.
12.Another study focused on
underachievement based on economic
disadvantage of students.
Purpose of Study
13. Thus, gender needs to be considered in the
education of children
14. How would Apple relate to single sexed
schools? Do they help equalize education for
all?
15. Official knowledge.
16. Who selects the curriculum for school
children? On what basis is the curriculum set
up? Is it based on the actual needs of students
or is it of a political nature?
17. Is a sociology of education still evident today?
18. It is felt that the political connection that
Apple indicated to is still evident today. Schools
are caught up in political and economic
webbing with mandates and national core
standards.
Purpose of Study
19.Can we shape students through codes of
conduct, sorting, and class management and
organization? Apple saw it in the 1970s and
we still see it today.
20. A national curriculum the way to make
education across the United States equal and
beneficial to all.
21. Although Apple does not go into much detail
on this concept, we can see that a national
curriculum in terms of core standards might
have a benefit to our children in that all
children across the United States might learn
the same curriculum.
Purpose of Study
22. ACT and SAT, would it be more beneficial for
them to learn the same things from kindergarten
all the way on?
23. He has made us very aware of the implications of
the political and economic implications of our
educational system.
24. Apple has looked at the various avenues involving
education and power when doing his research.
25. His research comes from years in the educational
system and later provided guidance and support to
teachers and educators.
26. He has looked at the issues of education from a
contemporary and critical viewpoint.
Purpose of Study
27.In Apples writing, there are strengths and
weaknesses in his works.
28. Through his lecturing and writing books about
culture, sociology and education, he has made
teachers, administrators, parents and other
interested parties aware of the forces that
shape an educational system.
29. The subject is not outdated and is relevant in
all generations.
30. However, he failed to provide enough research
and methodology to make his point.
31. More studies were needed from across the
United States of school systems.
Purpose of Study
32. It is felt that the conclusions provided are as
relevant today as they were 35 years ago.
33. Apple needs to provide follow up as to how his
topic of the seventies relates to todays schools
and how he sees education in the United States
from a contemporary viewpoint.
34. With modern technology, he could get
information in the form of surveys and
questionnaires not only from the United States,
but from all over the world.
35. He does set ground work for future research
when he talks about users choice, privatization
in schools.
Purpose of Study
36.Although not as prevalent then as now, he
foresaw this to be a part of the educational
system in the form of vouchers and charter
schools for profit.
37. It is felt that Apples work should be part of a
college curriculum in preparing students to
teach children.
38. They need to be aware of the pitfalls and
details of the education system and ways to
deal with it.
39. College students need to be aware of the
sociology of education and ways to handle it.
40. Our politicians need to be aware of this
research so they can renovation our education
systems and make education fair and equitable
for all.
Purpose of Study
41.Those involved directly in the education of
children of all ages.
42. It is felt that he needed to discuss and define
further certain points he made for a better
understanding as some of the points he made were
vague, for instance, he should have provided the
reader with more of a description of Marxism and
make a clearer case for how it relates to schools.
43. This paper provided insight on curriculum and
contemporary education.
44. Michael Apple has given us food for thought as
we educate children despite the constraints of the
current educational system.
45. I believe he covered the points that needed to be
made and articulated. People in the educational
arena, not only teachers and administrators, but
those in places of influential power would benefit
from his research and writings
