Introduction
A can crusher is a device used for
crushing soft drink and soda cans.
It simply reduces the size of a can by
compressing it.
This is done to save more space in the bin.
This also makes the storage and transport
easier.
It provides the ease of crushing more
number of cans in less time.
It also makes the recycling process of cans
more quick and efficient.
Need
For recycling the used cans, they are
transported to a facility which melts and
shapes them for reuse.
Empty cans contain mostly air due to
which they take a lot more space than
required.
This extra space poses a problem while
handling, transporting and storing them.
So, there is a need to crush these cans
to reduce the space which will make it
easier to store and transport them.
A can crusher is the perfect device for
Working Principle
The can crusher works on a simple slider-
crank mechanism.
The crank is a small circular disk which is
rotated by means of a handle or a motor.
The connecting rod is a lever or link which
connects the crank and piston.
The piston is a plunger which slides inside the
cylinder.
As the crank rotates, the rotary motion is
transmitted by the connecting rod to the
piston which moves towards the can and
applies force resulting in the crushing action.
Type
s
Can crushers are mainly classified into three main
types as:-
1. Manual Can Crusher
These can crushers are the most commonly
used and cheap.
Manual means they are operated by either
hand or foot.
In these crushers, cans are loaded and
unloaded one by one manually.
Each time a new can is crushed by application
of manual force.
Manual crushers can also be classified into
Hand Operated Can Crushers
Foot Operated Can Crushers
2. Semi-Automatic Can Crusher
These crushers are modified
versions of manual crushers.
They have a collection tray or
hopper on top to hold multiple
cans.
The problem of loading the cans
one by one is eliminated.
These are also operated manually
by hand and hence they are semi-
automatic.
They have higher cost than manual
3. Automatic Can Crusher
.These crushers are the most advanced and
expensive ones.
.They do not require any manual effort for
crushing.
.In these crushers, the piston moves
automatically with the help of some external
power source.
.They can crush more number of cans with
high speed and thus save a lot of time.
.They are also classified into two types i.e.
i. Pneumatic can crusher
ii.Hydraulic can crusher
i. Pneumatic Can Crusher:-

In these crushers, a
compressor is incorporated which
provides high pressure air upon the
piston. This pressurized air exerts a
force on the piston which moves
forward and crushes the cans.
ii. Hydraulic Can Crusher:-
These crushers are very
similar to pneumatic crushers in
working principle. The only
difference is that instead of air, a
hydraulic fluid usually an oil is
used which transmits the motion
to the piston.
Advantages
Reduces the size of the can upto 85-
90%.
Reduces the manual labour required.
Makes disposal, storage and transport
easier.
High leverage design makes easy
recycling.
Simple in construction and working.
Portable and easy to handle.
The hopper can hold a large number
of cans.
Disadvantage
s
Manual crushers require more manual force.
Manual crushers require loading and unloading
manually which slows down the process.
Automatic crushers require external power
source.
Automatic crushers are complex, non-portable,
expensive.
Wooden crushers are weak and susceptible to
damage.
Applications
Manual crushers are used in malls, movie theatres,
stadiums, etc.
Wall mounted crushers are placed near vending machines.
Automatic crushers are used in recycling industries before
melting process.
Due to their simplicity, they are also used in household
recycling.
