INTERVIEW: FIELD SUPERVISOR (MRS.
SANDRA SANDY BLACK, BSW
(BEREAVEMENT COORDINATOR, RCH)
Q1: What does your position as bereavement coordinator entail?
Answer: Based on guidelines for Medicare, I as the bereavement
coordinator provide bereavement services to the families for at
least a year after the death of a love one. In the form of follow-up
contact of: mailings, visits and phone calls.
Q2: WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A
BEREAVEMENT COORDINATOR?

Answer: I think with my many years of medical and school social


work, this position just fits my feel of compassion for those in need.
Not to say that there are not a lot of compassionate people out
there, but some just seem to fail at listening, when sometimes that
is all that is desperately needed.
Q3: WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE IN A POSITION OF
THIS CALIBER PRIOR TO STARTING TO WORK HERE?

ANSWER: My experience in the mortuary business at Boles Funeral


Home for 3 years as their Aftercare Coordinator. Calling or visiting
the family one month after the death. Plus my 16 years of Medical
Social Work at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount for 3 years
right out of college, and my 13 years at First Health Moore Regional.
Q4: WHAT ARE YOU
STRENGTHS IN THIS
POSITION?
ANSWER: A compassionate heart, empathy for others, and a willing
and listening ear.
Q5:THIS POSITION IS SOMETIMES FAST-PACED
AND STRESSFUL, TELL ME HOW DOES THIS
AFFECT YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES?

ANSWER: I guess I feel like my number one priority is with the


families, but sometimes that is just not possible because of the
added meetings and events that are part of this position.
Q6:WHAT WOULD BE THE TRAITS THAT YOU
WOULD LOOK FOR IF PUT IN A POSITION TO
HIRE SOMEONE IN A JOB OF THIS CAPACITY?
ANSWER: Maturity, professionalism, and the capacity and
willingness to help others.
Q7: AND FINALLY HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN
COMPOSURE AND PROFESSIONALISM DURING
THESE POTENTIALLY EMOTIONAL MEETINGS?

Answer: PRAYER!!!!! I also rely on my strong spiritual faith. And my


wonderful work family here at Richmond County Hospice of support
staff and co workers.
