Lighting: its effect on people and spaces SEM

how do you light a candy store?

How do you light a funeral parlor?
How does the lighting affect our impression of the
space?
What makes the lighting in a space enjoyable?
Or perhaps not enjoyable?
Why do you choose to spend time in a particular
space?
Or perhaps not to spend time there?
The answers to these questions are what make
lighting an exciting subject. Some of it is common
sense, but it takes research and/or experience to
provide the justification.

ABSTRACT
To implement a successful lighting solutionwe must fully understand
lighting design. A variety of designers may function as the lighting designer,
i.e., the architect, electrical engineer, facility manager, interior designer,
landscape architect, or urban planner

Designers are concerned about the aesthetics, the
art of lighting. It also means utilizing an enormous

new technology, the science of lighting. But most
importantly, lighting is for people, so there must be
an understanding of the visual quality users need for
health, safety, and enjoyment. While the big three
are the people, the aesthetics, and technical body of
knowledge, we are dreaming if we do not factor in
the economics and the environment.

In the schematic design phase of the process, many lighting designers think
in layers:
visual task: providing enough light to recognize a flaw in black silk or to
be able to walk safely through a corridor

ABSTRACT
BSTRACT
general lighting or ambient lighting: to set a mood or impression and
maybe the lighting that provides for safe circulation within the space
visual interest: something that adds a touch of magic, or something to
tickle the users joy button.

INTRODUCTION
2016-2017
M.ARCH 1st
Light is the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Light radiates and SEM

can
travel unlimited distances through space. Light rays can however, be
reflected,
transmitted or absorbed when they strike an object. The visible spectrum is
only a
small part of the full electromagnetic spectrum. The main source of our
natural light is the sun, which has a core temperature of approximately
10,000,000 K but a surface temperature which is a relatively cool 6,000 K. It is
this surface temperature which determines the energy levels at the different
frequencies of the electromagnetic spectrum

up from the different frequency components of the visible spectrum.
Artificial light from sources such as candles, tungsten filaments and gas
discharge lamps, etc., has a different mix of frequency components which
produce a different colour light This is also true for indirect natural light which
has been reflected or refracted and where some of the colour components
have been absorbed in the process.

The human eye has evolved over millennia under the influence of natural
light.. The eye, is most sensitive to colours at the centre of the visible
spectrum.

RATIONALE FOR SELECTING THE TOPIC
2016-2017
M.ARCH 1st
The topic intends to discuss the latest advent in technologies and to make the SEM

interior environment ambient with lesser involvement of energy level by

studying the minimum requirement of the concerned area. So a topic thought
to be useful with the concept of studying the demand at the individual level
rather than following the conventional feeding. Lighting requirement at a
smaller and a bigger scale both to be discussed.

ATIONALE AND AIM

AIM

INTRODUCTION
To study the importance and role of Lighting in
modifying the virtual world and the realm of the
building and to come up with the practical
assessement as per the human comfort level.

OBJECTIVE
2016-2017
M.ARCH 1st
To understand where the conventional lighting can be replaced with the SEM

technology to achieve savings through a selection of fixture and making it

eco-friendly.

BJECTIVE AND RELEVANCE

RELEVANCE
Detailed study of the subject

METHODS OF LIGHT CALCULATIONS
2016-2017
Point source calculations M.ARCH 1st
SEM

This method of calculation is particularly suitable for outdoor schemes, with a

small number of light sources and when it is necessary to
calculate the illuminance at a small number of points.

Lumen method of light calculations

This method is most suitable for interior lighting design , where a high

proportion of light on the working plane is reflected by internal surfaces. For
external applications or where the reflectance of the surfaces is unknown or

may
not be relied upon (emergency lighting schemes), a utilisation factor for zero
reflectance may be used.

UPLIGHTING

Uplighters illuminate the ceiling and upper walls. These surfaces act as
secondary sources providing soft diffused lighting to the room
