What is Data Logger?

An electronic device that records data over time or in

relation to location either with a built in instrument or
sensor or via external instruments and sensors.
Increasingly, but not entirely, they are based on a digital
processor or computer.

Where does photosynthesis take place in a plant?
Photosynthesis takes placeinsideplant cells called
chloroplasts. Chloroplasts mostly found in the mesophyll
layer contain a chlorophyll.

How are leaves adapted for photosynthesis?

Photosynthesisis the process by whichleavesabsorb
light and carbon dioxide to produce carbohydrate (food)
for plants to grow.Leavesareadaptedto perform their
function for example they have a large surface area to
absorb sunlight.
EMPOWER
PROCEDURES

The oxygen and temperature (and humidity) sensors are

connected to the DrDAQ data logger.
A piece of turf is cut to fit the container. With about 2 cm of soil
it will continue to grow well.
A couple of sticks are inserted into the soil.
The bag must be put next to a window as light levels quickly fall
off going into a room.
PicoLog is set to record at one sample per minute, with a
maximum of 1440 samples (i.e. one days worth of data).
The graph is set to show light, oxygen content, humidity and
temperature, with the time scale set to time of day.

PBL QUESTIONS

Did you know photosynthesis stop reaction at

night ?

Based what you know about pigment, why do

some people who live in very hot , sunny
climates wear white ?

Which pigments provide the maximum

efficiency for a plant as it conducts
photosynthesis ?
ANSWER Q1

Photosynthesis stop reaction at night, but

respiration still happen.
ANSWER Q2

Because white reflects all of the wavelengths of

visible light , and the resulting less absorption.
ANSWER Q3

Chloroplast

HOW IS PHOTOSYNTHESIS ESSENTIAL TO LIFE ON EARTH?

Animals and plants both synthesize fats and proteins from carbohydrates;
thus glucose is a basic energy source for all living organisms. The oxygen
released with water vapor, in transpiration as a photosynthetic byproduct,
principally of phytoplankton, provides most of the atmospheric oxygen
vital to respiration in plants and animals, and animals in turn produce
carbon dioxide necessary to plants. Photosynthesis can therefore be
considered the ultimate source of life for nearly all plants and animals by
providing the source of energy that drives all their metabolic processes.
CONCLUSION
Of course, we humans get the benefit of all that food, water, and
yummy oxygen that photosynthesis creates. At the same time,
we contribute to the process in a continuous cycle of
dependencies. We expel lots of carbon dioxide into the
environment in the process of breathing, which provides some
of the necessary components for photosynthesis to create more
food, oxygen, and water. Everything's connected in the process:
The sun shines, we breathe, plants suck up sunlight and carbon
dioxide, which in turn is used to create food and water for us to
eat and drink, and oxygen for us to breathe... And the cycle
continues for as long as the sun shines.
