LUNG CANCER

WHAT IS IT?

Lung cancer is a type of cancer that interferes with the way

you breath and it makes breathing very difficult.
It is able to spread to different parts of your body.
It starts in the spongy, pinkish gray walls of your lungs and
airways.
Two main types are non-small cell lung cancer and small cell
lung cancer
It is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the US for both men
and women, but is also the most preventable

Cigarette smoking because of the 4,000 chemicals contained

in cigarettes
Asbestos
Tobacco
Pipe and cigar smoking

Heredity
EFFECTS ON THE BODY/MIND

Lung cancer causes excessive coughing because when the

tumor develops it presses on the chest
The person may develop voice hoarseness if the tumor puts
pressure on the nerves
The tumor can fill the chest cavity and cause chest pain
Lung cancer can metastasize much earlier.
A significant number of lung cancer cases are detected due to
symptoms of metastatic lung cancer.
Can be detected in glands, the brain, bones, and the liver
DOES IT SPREAD?

Heredity
Second hand smoke from strangers or family
It can spread to other parts of the body like the brain, liver,
and bones because cells from the tumor break off which is
called metastasis
Can not spread the same way viruses like the flu are spread
