Cement distribution
Much of cement transportation in India is done through rail and roads,
depending on the proximity of the plant to the market. Sea transportation is
also utilised and Ambuja Cements has been a pioneer in this. Road
transportation accounts for major portion of the distribution of the cement
around the country. It is mostly carried through Trucks.
One of the major problems in India is that the size of trucks that carry cement
are much smaller than those used in the US and Europe. This leads to
efficiency problems throughout the country. Most trucks fall into the 9 t
category, compared with sizes of 28 t and 32 t used in other countries.
THE PROCESS

Basic raw materials used for manufacturing of cement are :

Limestone
Clay
Silica
Gypsum
Manufacturing process involves the following steps:
Quarrying and crushing
Grinding and blending of raw materials
Clinker production
Finish grinding
THE PROCESS

Step 1: Elements such as calcium carbonate, silica, alumina and iron ore
are generally extracted from limestone, clay, and silica in order to
produce cement.
Step 2: In this stage raw grinding and burning is done. Very fine grinding
produces a fine powder, known as raw meal, which is preheated and then
sent to the kiln. The material is heated to 1,500C before being suddenly
and dramatically cooled by bursts of air. This producesclinker, the basic
material required for the production of all cements.
Step 3: This step is handled in a cement grinding mill, which may be
located in a different place to the clinker plant. Gypsum and possibly
additional cementitious (such as blastfurnace slag, coal fly ash, natural
pozzolanas, etc.) or inert materials (limestone) are added to the clinker.
All constituents are ground leading to a fine and homogenous powder.
End of phase two. The cement is then stored in silos before being
dispatched either in bulk or bagged.
SUPPLIERS

Ambuja cement has the suppliers across the

country. The reason behind, having the
geographically diverse suppliers is to
ensuring and maintain the quality of cement.

Lime Stone from Himachal

Pradesh

SUPPLIERS

Silica from Rajasthan and Delhi.
SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

Ambuja has adopted the Online Order Processing

System
Manage the flow of information about the orders
from creation to fulfillment .
It also includes acceptance of customer orders,
paper processing, retrival from the warehouse,
dispatch to the transporters, transfer of information
to production department.
SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

Inventory Management: Includes when to

order and how much to order, helpful to
control the carrying cost, well develop system
of inbound raw materials (materials receiving,
distributing, support system etc.)

Packaging: Cement was packed in 50 kgs

packet bags using jute bags. Ambuja was the
1st to use paper bags for better preservation
with low cost.
SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

TRANSPORTATION:
Cement is highly freight intensive in nature. manufacturing of each tonne
involved a transportation of 1.6 tonne of limestone,0.25 tonnes of coal,
0.05 tonnes of gypsum.
Road transportation beyond 200 kms was not economical, 55% transported
through railways.
Unavailability of wagons for transportation on western and southeastern
railways.
In 2003,70% of the movement worldwide was by sea compared to only
1% in india.
Ambuja Cements was the first co. to use water transportation for domestic
as well as export consignments.
