WHAT IS AMOEBIASIS?
Amoebiasis is a condition in which your
intestines becomes infected with the E.
histolytica.
90% of infections is asymptomatic.
Remaining 10% is symptomatic.
Reservoir (Host) is only human.
Resistant to chlorine
Readily killed to antibiotics and heat
(75C)
WHERE CAN WE GET IT?
Contaminated water, soil and other damp
environments.
Mode of Transmission:
- It is by Fecal-Oral Route
- Direct hand to mouth contact if they follow poor
hygiene practices
(eg, not washing properly after going to the toilet).
- Sexual contact via oral-rectal route
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
9 out of 10 people who are infected with E.
histolytica have no symptoms
If symptoms occur, they are seen 7 to 28 days
after being exposed to the parasite.
Mild:
Abdominal cramps
Diarrhea
Passage of 3 - 8 sem-iformed stools per day
with mucus and occasional blood
Fatigue
Excessive gas
Rectal pain while having a bowel
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Severe symptoms:
Abdominal tenderness
Bloody stools
Passage of liquid stools with streaks of blood
10 - 20 stools per day
High grade fever
Vomiting
