Concept Check
Skills means the ability to do something well. Students are expected to develop and excel in
certain skills by the end of their program.
3 types of skills :
1. HARD skills or Work content skills involve specific knowledge and abilities. These are unique to
the occupation/Job, i.e., skills as an Accountant, Teacher, Dental Assistant, IT professional and
so on.
2. SOFT skills focus on attributes and personality traits. These are self-management skills such as
teamwork, communication, attitude, reliability.
3. TRANSFERABLE skills or Portable skills are those HARD and SOFT skills that relate to many
occupations, i.e., proficiency with MS Office Suite applications, or the ability to manage time
using Outlook, etc. You apply these skills in many different situations. These skills can be
enhanced, modified and developed further as you progress in your career. Some skills are more
transferable than others so you need to determine how your skills relate to each new job
opportunity.
These skills are also known as life skills. Dr. Spencer Kagan, a
renowned clinical psychologist and full-time Professor of
Psychology and Education at the University of California
explains life skills as-
