-consists of road users including:
i. Transport Facility Capacity - is the maximum
hourly rate at which persons or vehicles
reasonably expected to traverse a point or a
uniform segment of a lane or roadway during a
given time period under prevailing roadway,
traffic and control conditions.
ii. Vehicle Capacity - is the maximum
number of vehicles that can pass a given
point during a specified period under
prevailing roadway, traffic and control
conditions

iii. Person Capacity - is the maximum

number of persons that can pass a given
point during a specified period under
prevailing conditions.
Base Conditions
Roadway Conditions
Traffic Conditions
Control Conditions
Lane widths: 3.6m
Clearance of 1.8m (between edge of travel
lanes and nearest objects at roadside)
Free-flow speed of 100km/hr for multilane
Only passenger cars in the stream (no heavy
cars)
Level terrain
Number of lanes
Type of facility and environment
Lane widths
Design speed
Horizontal and vertical alignments, etc.
i. Vehicle Type
-for interrupted flow facilities
-control of time
- is a mathematical model of
real-world traffic
Planners:
-focus on network performance in broad
-supply-demand interactions
-main interest is at level of land use impacts
Engineers:
-need to know how changes to the design of a
specific facilities will affect how it performs in
terms of capacity , delays
State variables
Events that are possible
Processing Logic
Time-step logic t
x at time
x =y at time
x(t) t+1
at time step t
x = x(t) x t between time steps t and t+t
